View Full Version : My TD4 Auto surges!

When driving uphill (not really steep) and on a set throttle my Free surges!
As mentioned the throttle is set to approx mid - 2/3 rds position and not moved.
Then, watching the rev counter, (top gear) and up to 2400 revs, the ‘pull’ is crap. However, from 2400, the engine springs into life and really does surge forward.
This surge then reduces/stops at 2800, and the revs then (slowly) drop back to 2400!
The whole cycle then repeats its self until the hill flattens or you floor the throttle. Any ideas please?

Apart from check that the turbo and wastegate pipes are on, all the connectors are secure and the autobox oil level is correct, then it might pay to see if there are any fault codes.

Or a faulty MAF ??
No waste gate on a TD4 Chris, it has a Variable Vane Turbo.
Gmzez, this sounds very much like a MAF failure as mentioned by Willo. One quick way to check is to disconnect the MAF sensor and drive the vehicle. With the MAF disconnected the ECU will assume a default setting and you should notice an improvement in the vehicle in the higher rev range.

Gmzez, Have a look at this thread (http://www.freelanderowners.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5146&highlight=maf)

Cheers all... I had an idea it may be the MAF. Theres a bloke who sells a thing called MAFAM. Its a small box of tricks that increases performance and is connected in line with the MAF. Istead of using the Std Bosch MAF he advised to swap for a pierberg MAF at around £50 I think, but it needs to be connected to the MAFAM to work correctly. Any thoughts?

If you buy such a mafam and you will go with the Pierburg instead of the Bosch make sure there is a temperature sensor on the mafam as Pierburg does not support the ambient temperature of the airinlet where the Bosch does. (If that bloke is Ron you need to have a MAFAM75p if you go for the Pierburg otherwise it is a normal mafam). This just as info.
Good luck.

You are correct, I forgot that, Carl.
Duratorq has similar, it's probably that. Not variating.
