Only money you need is for food, fuel, tips and bribes. Ferries are the greatest expense.

Conkers raised the subject of this Morocco trip last weekend. However, it didn't get discussed too much. Sooooooo, what's happening guys?
I'm not 100% on it just yet but I've been given a 'green light' from Mrs AJ to attend alone :D (she's got no hols left after summer) and I've got additional leave to cover a decent trip. The only problem for me would be securing certain dates but October I believe is the best time.

I think he meant 2 days off road between tarmac. IIRC theres a long piste from the dunes at Merzouga to Zagora that is a leisurely 2 days or speedy long day. Depending on where you go and how far the tarmac has spread you can spend much of the time offroad. The trips I did in 95/96 were about 1000miles total in Morroco and about half offroad.

It's something I have only vaguely thought about. I have had more specific intentions of a family exped (with the two kids) around Scandinavia and Iberia, but haven't seriously considered Morocco because of the time it would take to get there and back in addition to the exped itself, but <20days is quicker than I expected. Having built the 109 to a semi-exped spec (a compromise between a family day-to-day vehicle and an exped vehicle), it would be n ice to use its capabilities.
How do you get there? Do you drive all the way and get a short crossing across the Straights of Gibraltar, or do you get a long ferry from somewhere? What are the typical costs?

Snagger, Aj is the man to talk to about costs, he has done several independant trips already, but i think around the 2k-2.5k mark, wiht ALOTT of this been ferries.
Two option, either catch the ferry into spain, short drive and another ferry, or catvh the ferry into france and a long drive followed by short ferry..
If thinking the france route, have to remmeber that it is a long drive form there and the cost of diesel and wear and tear on the vehicles..

just a hopefully logical opinion but the 1st option would probably prolong the trip given that the vehicles would be more likely to complete the exped. Just a thought, seems little sacrifice to save the vehicle and, with respect to france, the driving would be 'better' i.e. what your after in, morroco would it not, i feel like i may have just repeated toppa but it were worth a shot:rolleyes::)
Plymouth to Santander 24 hrs(ish) Brittany Ferries
Portsmouth to Bilbao 36 hrs(ish) P&O Ferries
Long drive through Spain. Overnight stop in southern Spain and following morning catch ferry to Tangiers or Ceuta from Algeciras (couple of hrs depending on ferry).
Ferries, Fuel, food, green card, campsites and even a posh hotel or two wil be covered easily by £1500 (2 people, 1 vehicle (overheight) no trailer.

We went Portsmouth - Bilbao (arond £600), then got as far as Granada at the end of our first day and on to Algerciras the next day. We didn't break our necks, but nor did we hang around.
That said, I think two weeks all in might be a little hectic and of that two weeks a week of it would be spent getting to and from UK.

Very late into the thread - as usual (I have to say it before anyone else does) - but don't forget the suggestion Marc Lurie made for 2012.
He suggested slotting some of our Landies into a 40ft ISO and shipping it to somewhere reasonably honest on the West coast of Africa. Marc and Brigid, with possibly Kevin (K&S) and a couple of the other SA forumeers, would drive up to meet us, then guide us, 3500Km off road, back down to Johannesburg where the plan was to watch one World Cup football match, recrate the Landies and fly home.
How about them apples for a long term plan?

So there is some interest in this then?
Need to get a new map as i gave mine to someone, Need to plan a route, some of us have been several times, so would be good to find out where they want to go that is new..
As AJ said, for the UK members wouldd be good to dash through spain and get into morocco as soon as poss to have more time there.
Posh hotels, dont mind one maybe two for a night each but camping is fine with me......
How to get around lots of names and no one showing up.
I think, make a plan, and make a date to book the ferry, if you aint booked the ferry by that date, you aint keen and we will assume you will be a no show.
Myself and Dorris are keen.

If I were you ( I can't come:() I'd set up a poll for dates and go from there. That'll sort out men from boys. I don't think you need a leader but you should thrash out an itinery. On the Morroco trips I did, 2 groups (10 bikes) always occured naturally, one was faster and stopped less and one took a more leisurely pace (guess which I was in;)), but we always met up at the end of the day. You all need to be flexible and forgiving, some people seemed to be very stressed by Morroco when I went.
I have some 1:200,000 maps of the middle Atlas you could copy. The Map shop in Upton-on-Severn (google) has these and others too.
Good luck you lucky lucky b*ggers! Maybe I'll join you next trip
toppa
24th Apr 2007, 18:36
Rob, didnt want to get involved with polls, there was a core group that decided to go, so dates would be set by what time leave can be taken by one member in particular, otherwise it turns into a fiasco... As its two weeks and not a weekend like the treausre hunt, i can really see no date ever been decided on by a poll...
We'll think of you and your bike when we are there :D

I went to morocco in October 2003 in my 88" diesel. Went the ferry to Spain route, the Plymouth to Santander ferry is the quickest. Spent 2 days travelling down to Algerciras, I know people who have done it in 1 day put I could only manage 60mph. Early ferry across to Ceuta and then 12 days in Morocco. Did the Volubilis, Todra route down to Merzouga and into the Erg Chebi dunes. The return leg was up to Fez and back to Ceuta.
If I was to do it again (and I intend to soon) I would take at least 3 weeks. I did a mixture of camping and some small hotel/hostels we came across on route and would probably not change that.
I just look at it as a long camping trip and I dont think anything special is needed for this kind of trip. If your vehicle is in good nick then a few basic spares and tools are all that you need. Over 4000+ mile on my trip the only thing that went wrong was the fan belt snapped on the first day in Morocco. I had intended to change it before I left but had never got around to it.
Its one of those trips that everyone should do at least once.

Well here is my (very Late) 2 pence worth.
We went with the LRO club last October and went for 17 days.
We took the ferry from Portsmouth to Bilbao which they got at a discounted rate as they were a big group (which by the look of this thread it would be) The ferry was ok on the way out but a real drag on the way back.
We drove to Algercieras in one day, infact our whole group did. I ended up with an knackered 110 as a running partner who managed to squeeze 60 out of it for most of the way. It is a long day but if I had the choice I owuld do the same again. We stayed in a campsite about 1hr from the port and had a days rest there before heading to Ceuta
Once in Morocco we were putting in High mileage each day, Visiting some very nice places. we stayed in Meknes, Zagora, Todra Gorge, (not in that order) and all had fine campsites.
We ended up in the desert and spent only one and a half days there which was dissapointing, I would have prefered to spend more time in the dunes than on the corigations!.
We finished off with 2 nights in Fez then home.
I would suggest a one way ferry ticket and then road trip it back.

Roger.
dont really like football but im sure i could be tempted with 5 years to plan and finance the operation. would a classic range rover be suitable as transport. any idea of the sort of costs and timeframe involved Roger?

Rissani/Merzougga to Mhamid is the longest stretch, maybe 100+ miles offroad. Zagora to Foum Zguid (across Lake Iriki) is about 70miles offraod. Plenty of other longuns thru the mountains.
