Hi, everybody. today in my " K " disco 2.5 diesel the battery light came on whilst the engine was running and at the same time the rev counter stopped operating. I checked to see if the fan belt had snapped but it was fine. I put a volt meter across the battery and it is not showing any charge. I know the obvious fault is likely to be the alternator has failed but how and why would it affect the rev counter ?

Anybody seen this problem before ?

All assitance welcomed my landrover friends. ( should of kept my series 3 mean machine )

I think the alternator powers the rev counter on the Tdi Disco's.

Yes the rev counter is run from the alternator so alternator not working no rev counter

it would also account for the battery warning light - if the alternator aint workin propers - then the battery aint charging.

Brushes, probably, though could be regulator, but they are a combined unit.
Quite an easy replacement for about £14.
Sometimes the the revcounter will go jittery for a few hundred miles, battery light still off, especially when damp or under high load.
Another fault the rev counter can show up is suddenly dropping out when hot, or above certain revs. This can be the more serious fault of a duff diode.

Hi, thanks for reply. I am not to bad at basic repairs and would atempt to fit the brushes and regulator. Do you know where they can be purchased from ?
