Hi, I have a 95 3.9 ES auto and it was last servised at 91000 miles-it now has 96500 miles on it. I only purchased it around 4 months ago and was wandering what should be changed plus checked for the next service. In the manuel the intermidate is at 6000 miles which it is cominmg soon and the main is at 12000 miles. According to my service book it is due for a main service, so what needs doing. I'm not taking it to a landy garage which it has been in all the other services. I'm thinking gearbox, axle and engine oil change. What do Land Rover do for a main service?

Your best bet would be to invest in a Haynes manual or, better still, a genuine LR manual. To be frank, I would suggest with a vehicle with that sort of mileage, start the servicing schedule again. Unless you are absolutely sure it has been followed as per LR until you bought it.

Service items are not expensive for the DI. Even with a full fluid change and all the filters it shouldn't be £100. You will know it is done then.

Ive always had deisel LRs, and change the oil at half the recomended intervals. My belief is: oil is cheap, engines aren't.

I was quoted 400 quid for a major service on my 1997 Disco 300TDi by the local stealership

I gracefully declined once I regained consciousness.

Ordered a service kit from Difflock.com, plus a few tools I didn't have and the total was less than £100. Did it myself and now I have the tools to do them in future.

IIRC, the 96000 is major - replace all fluids, check and adjust valve clearances, brakes and other usual checks. May also benefit from a coolant drain and refill if it hasn't been done in last 2 years. I'll see if I can dig up the service sheet and forward it on to you via pm.
