Hi All,
Just thinking about adding a 2001 Disco TD5 XS Auto, FSH with 140,000 miles on the clock to the long line of Defenders in our stable...

Seemingly it has Climate, ACE, 18" wheels etc etc - Assume all this is standard on an XS?

The seller is asking £6995 - Is this a fair price or over priced?

Apparently its in excellent condition, very clean and no leaks or blemishes...

Obviously it needs a drive and looking at but I'd like to know what price it should be before / if I go...

Thanks
Jon

Hi
That seems an OK price.
I have just bought a 52 reg facelifted XS with 80K miles and fsh.
It also has ACE, 18" alloys etc.
I paid £10500 and a friend at the local dealer thought it was avery good buy, he said he would have had it on thier forcourt for £14995.http://images.landrovernet.com/icons/icon10.gif

Hi and thanks for the reply - cost would sound about right then.

A few more questions...
What should I be looking out for when I look at the vehicle? I'm aware of all the issues re running gear, TD5 engine, rear boot floor & door and clearly all the electrics need to work, but what about the auto gearbox - Anything special? Anything else?

Whats your opinion on the ACE? I have read a few threads on here recently - some seem to say its cr*p and when the air bags develop holes, replace with coils, others say its fantastic. How long should the test drive be to determine an opinion? Is it something thats immediately obvious or is it something that creeps up on you over time? Dont forget Ive driven mainly Defenders for the last number of (I care to forget!!) years..

What sort of mpg should a Disco TD5 auto give? Should it be worse, better or equal to a TD5 Defender with Disco Transfer gears (my current motor of choice!!)?

I'm aware that the auto's are sloooow in standard guise, but it will be getting one of our performance intercoolers and TD5 remap on it, so that would redress the balance a little...

ACE is Active Cornering Enhancement. Nothing to do with the air springs. That is SLS, self-levelling Suspension.

ACE is ace, and it seems to have few problems. SLS is also ace if you tow a lot. The springs and compressor have about 5 years life, then need replacing. The springs are around £100 each and the compressor £250+vat.

You sound like your worried about fuel consumption, then go on to tell us you are going to make it use more juice:confused:

Ok, Ive had my wires crossed a bit, but either way its sounds like a thumbs up for the technology. I must have been thinking about the self levelling suspension as it sounds like this is the bit that replaces the coils.

If the springs and compressor last about 5 years then it sounds like it may need a set before long... Is it easy to see if they are knackered now?

As for the fuel consumption - Im not too concerned, I just dont want to get a suprise and find that the auto box makes it drinks like a V8! If its similar to my remapped TD5 90 then I'd be happy.

Sorry for the questions!

My friends TD5 auto discovery is used mainly around town, shortish trips, and he gets around 18-20 mpg. On longer runs this goes up to 26-28mpg

Thanks very much for this... Given the high mileage and auto box I'll give this one a miss.

Thanks for the input.

Perhaps I paid more for mine because of the low mileage - only 72k now after sixteen months with me. Mine is very spartan X reg 2000, with no a/c, sun roofs or ace. It does have SLS and true, my air compressor died not long ago, but other than that it is very useful. The compressor was always quite noisy and I didn't know enough to know it was on its way out until it stopped altogether. Now I know what it should sound like.

As mentioned on another thread, I find the auto to be indispensible. I use it for work, in and around London and you need a note from your Doctor to say your joints are up to using a manual! But aside from that, the auto is the transmission of choice if you are towing anything and it really makes you look good when you go off road.

I routinely get more than 400 miles from 70 - 72 litres of cheapo diesel.

Roger.
