 I have just replaced the alternator on my disco but found that the replacement did not cure the problem. Same symptoms, battery light on and no rev counter. I spoke to the bloke from alternator place and he told me the alternator has to have a permanant 12 volt supply to the big terminal on the back of the alternator in order for it to function. Anybody know were this power cable comes from or were it gets it's permanant power from ?
All good advice welcome as I am going to get wet this weekend by the looks of it.

mmmmm i know an alternator needs power fed into it when it first starts to spin (starting the car ) before it can generate, didnt think it needed permanent power though as it creates the power after it has been "tickled".. Mines a 110 and the only thick brown wire i have from memory goes to the ignition key and fuse box, to liven up the fuses required when the truck is running...
DOnt know if that is of any help to you...

From memory, most alternators will have three wires:
One for the rev counter
The very large output cable
The final one is the one probably causing you the problems. This one is the live input. It is relatively low current and only needed to generate the magnetic field in the alternator coils. If there is no input here, you will get no output.
Which model Disco is yours?
