I went to a local Decathlon shop at lunchtime yesterday. I think it is a French chain of supermarkets for everything sporty/outdoor. I'd gone there with two colleagues and with little in mind to buy.

However, I did buy myself a fishing rod, designed for sea fishing from a boat. It came with a reel and line already loaded, some very small lures, hooks and a 10gm plumb. Extended it is 1.5m in length and can withstand a 4.5kg pull. It was a mere ?26.00 euro and contracts to just a couple of feet.

pictures are a bit blurry cos they were taken at sunrise this morning, I too was a bit blurry at that time

When you buying the boat? :p

when I win the pools, corse it'd be a good idea to start playing them first...

but in the mean time I'll be using me brother's boat which is moored at Hartlepool, different kettle of fish from the Med. but I reckon mackerel are fun to catch no matter where you are.

can't get the pics to load!?

Hope you have good sea legs. Theres always a good swell on the North Sea even in calm weather. There speaks the voice of experience???

Cant remeber much about the specs on my rod, i rememebr it had clips got the harness and the spool was so low geared you could pull a truck with it....

never been boat fishing but i do a lot of pier and beach fishing.

using 12 - 14 foot rods running multiplier reels casting 5 or 6oz of lead around 200yds. we use 15 -18 lb lines and 40 - 60 lbs leaders

may have to get out boat fishing this year.

that road sounds very light for boat usage. sounds like a telescopic rod? these dont tend to be very good and have a habit of getting stuck while extended.

I LOVE FISHING! Rock and surf, fresh and sal****er fly fishing, tiger fishing, game fishing, esturine fishing ... etc. etc. etc.

Tomorrow morning Brigid and I are driving down to Grahamstown (about 550 miles from here) for a wedding on Sunday. As soon as the bl**dy wedding is over we're driving the 50 miles to Port Alfred, and I should have a line in the water by Sunday evening :p

Two years ago we were in Port Alfred and I was happily fishing in the river mouth. Then a wierd thing happened: The water level in the river dropped quite quickly (it took about 30 seconds) until the river was virtually just a trickle. Then the sea seemed to flow back into the river, pushing the river level back up again until it was almost overflowing the river bank. It did this about 4 times and then everything went back to normal.

Anyway, I thought it was strange but didn't really think about it again until the next morning when we got the news about the tsunami on boxing day. Our coast was protected by Madagascar, but there was some effect half way round the earth.

That's me in the Wild Coast of South Africa with a nice musselcracker taken on a light rod on 6 pound line with a shrimp bait. :)

Now that's funny.... The forum auto censors "salt water" if you spell it "sal****er" :D :D :D :D Who'd have thunk it? :D
