HI Guys

I am new to Disco ownership ( '99 TD5 Five seater ) and also to this forum. I notice a bit a problem with my Temp gauge yesterday and I was wonering if anyone has had a similar problem.

Basically I had the heater and heater fans going full blast from startup . It took a while longer for the temp gauage to read normal ( half way) but you would expect that. Now with the disco at normal operating temp I had the car sationary just ideling but I had left the heaters running, after about 5 mins I noticed that the temp had dropped to just above the bule mark, I then drove the disco again and within 1min the temp flew back up to half way. When I got home I parked it up but left it ideling with heaters and fan at full wack. Again about 5 mins later the temp gauge had dropped to just above the blue mark. Note that while this was going on the air from the heater was hot. I presume this is not normal, Or is it?. Someone made the point that with the disco at idel water in the engine is not moving around so fast, so the heater can take out more heat from the water. But I find that hard to believe, surely the thermosat should take car of that, and the temp gauage should read half way at Idel with the heaters on. The only other thing i can think of is possibly the thermostat opend fully while idel and the temp gauge dropped, and I thne didn't give it enough time to come back up wihout mmving the car.

Any ideas? Sorry about the long winded explaination

Thanks

td5 engine is a very efficient engine the pistons are Teflon coated so there is very little friction on the bores
my 90 is the same sitting on a cold rally stage for 4 hours with the engine idling is blooming cold!

What I have noticed about the temp gauge on the Td5 is that it is not linear, as you might expect: On a cold day my heater starts working when the needle has barely moved, which to me indicates the engine is near normal temp. Yet when the needle reads half way the engine is only slightly warmer.

Not sure if that makes sense, but mine behaves just like yours.

Welcome to the site and the foibles of LR ownership.

You are describing normal behaviour for a TD5 Disco. Whn the engine is under stress (i.e. you are driving it) it will reach operating temp and stay there. If the needle rises above half way and into the red then you have a problem, STOP!

When the engine is idling a TD5 will actually start to cool itself by virtue of the fact that the fan will always be spinning. Nowt to worry about.

As long as your blower dishes out hot air when you need it you have no worries .
