View Full Version : Battrey Drain fault

I am writing to ask for some technical advice/support for an issue which is causing huge frustration due to my battery going flat.

The cause of this fault is still unknown having had the car (1998 S reg Freelander, 2.0 XEDi) checked by the main dealer and a local landrover agent.

The battery can go flat within one hour of leaving the car locked outside my house having driven on a fullycharged battery.

The alternator appears to charge correctly - tested at roadside by RAC, dealer and agent.

The battery is brand new (changed twice in six months to eliminate fault).

A drain test has shown nothing draining and the fault is very intermittent and happens at random.

Any ideas? The RAC suggest it may be something to do with the central locking control module still energising the relays? Don't want to change the part until I'm clearer that its plausable.

Any help would be much appreciated

Paul

Do you have the option of turning off the alarm? If so, try that as I've heard some alarms stay 'active' for too long and drain the battery.

Carefully disconnect the alternator plug and leave it for a few hours. I'll bet good money it will still have full power ... the rectifier in some types of alternator have a tendency to give up sometimes and then they actually drain the battery after you leave it. Unfortunately it usually means a new alternator :(

Hi Paul, I have the the same model as you and a similar fault, it may not be the solution for you but my battery was not flat at all as the garage infomed me, there was a loose connection on the starter solenoid which I fiddled with and it started! the reason I questioned a flat battery was that all my ignition lights were on brightly, hope this helps.
