Hello everyone,
Hope everyones ok
Haven't been on here for a while due to lack of internet access.
Just wondered if anyone knows wether the disco td5 turbos are the same as the defender td5 turbos?
My turbos' started making some odd skreeeeching noises:eek: so I think its only a matter of time before it dies:( - thought I better do a bit of research.
I know the tdi turbos are different but don't know about the td5s.
Thanks in advance.

Maybe worth checking the oil lines are all ok?

Hi disco69, good to see you around again :)
The TD5 turbos are exactly the same for Disco and Defender - part number PMF100460.

Are you sure its the turbo screeching ? When they die, they usually go quickly,I would be spoting it out quickly or you will end up picking pieces out of the intercooler or filling the exhaust with bits and oil.

Unlikely, but have you changed the centrifugal oil filter recently. Some are (much) noisier than others.
**edit** are you sure it isn't the drive belt slipping?

Thanks for the help guys,
I'm fairly sure the squealing is from the turbo.
When I accelerate I can hear the turbo come in and if I put my foot down so the turbo reaches full pressure it skreeches quite loudly.
If I feather the throttle so the engine isn't working as hard it doesn't seem to make the same noise - it just sounds normal.
I changed the oil and filters this morning and its made no difference. I couldn't see any bits in the oil either so I guess the filters must be working.
I took the inlet pipe off the turbo to check there was no play in the bearings and found there was a little movement but not a lot.
She's parked up at the moment anyway to avoid causing any further expense!
I've never known a turbo squeal quite like this though - as jonv8 says, they usually die quickly.
Just a thought:idea: - could the wastegate be faulty?
Does the wastegate make a noise when activated?
Is there any way I can test it?
I guess if it is the wastegate I'll have to buy a new turbo anyway!
In the past, I've heard my engine make similar noises to the current skreeching but quieter and only momentarily.

The fault almost 100% is aa exhaust stud snapped off eithe no 1 or 5 pot and the exhaust gas,s are blowing past the ex manifold gasket i have had this happen twice to my TD5 when manifold off check for warping as this is common and mine was beant like a banana!
Got manifold from e-bay.
Before anyone asks this was before i tuned it up!

I was just about to say have you chipped it ? Forgotten about the squeak from the leaky manifold, last one I did had pulled the rearmost stud out of the head.I had to put a thread insert into it,BTW it is perfectly acceptable to machine the manifold flat again - and check that the loom shrouding to the oil pressure switch is melting at the same time.If it isnt you arent thrashing it enough.:D

You were spot on lynalldiscovery,
Just taken the heat shield off the turbo and both studs that hold the manifold on at no.5 cylinder have snapped off and I can see black(soot) marks around the manifold where the exhaust gasses have been escaping.
Is this a common fault on these engines - I haven't heard of it happening on these before?
I'm amazed at how many faults the td5's have - I've had more trouble in 8months of ownership than I had in 5 years of owning a 300tdi !:(
Its not difficult to work out why the Japanese 4x4's are so popular.
Having said that, I'd still rather spend all day sitting in a disco than a Jap 4x4. :)
Any tips on removing the manifold?
Are the rest of the studs likely to shear off as soon as a spanner touches them?

Remove the 3 nuts that hold turbo to manifold 13mm then remove turbo oil feed pipe 14mm then remove all manifold nuts 13mm if you have air con remove drive belt by using a 15mm spanner to spring back the belt tensioner then unbolt compressor 10mm then with a bit of wiggling you should be able to get manifold off, then you have the fun job of drilling and tapping or insert as stated above.
Not to long a job 2 to 3 hours all done.
Get new studs and nuts from landrover before you start.

Meant to say has the rad gone yet? or the head gasket or the front discs warped, or the fuel pump in the tank:) .
