Last MOT td5 failed on emissions. I was advised to take the car for a 'thrash' down the motorway to blow out the cobwebs. As I had had a Jeremy Fearns 'adjustment' I asked him what I should do. He said that he had not had one fail an emission check due to his work before but to bring it down for a looksee. He gave the disco a 'spirited drive' around the hills and dales then dispatching me the disco and one of his men to his testing station where it sailed through. My question is that as the MOT is due next February is there any additive that can be put in the tank to clean the system or is it just another good thrash before the test. I have seen some discussion before on this matter but am a bit hazy as to the answer

Happens to me every year. The man says give it some welly before you bring it in and it will be fine.

The problem is the soot builds up in the exhaust and makes a mess of the emissions. Give it a good blast for a couple of miles and the soot gets blown out.
