My 1999 TD5 has LOUD diesel knock when starting from cold. As soon as it warms up the engine is much quiter. Is this normal for a TD5 ??.

yes, most diesels do that.
I must admit it made me wonder if mine had something wrong with it the other day - it seemed very noisey on start up.
I think it seemed more noticeable because of the sudden cold weather after being very mild. (cold weather = more noise on start up until the engine gets a bit of warmth into it)

Same here. My 300Tdi was much quieter so when I got the Td5 I thought "uh oh!", but it's normal.
Don't forget only 4 heater plugs so cylinder 5 takes just that little bit longer to warm up
