Hi Folks....
Christmas shopping with the wife and four kids came to an early finish today...I lost all drive to the wheels...not an bit drive left in the old girl!
My 52 plate facelift V8 Auto Disco has lost her drive at 89k....no warning lights, no crunching, no leaks...no nothing....just a smooth runing engine!
Tranfer box appears ok, although I could'nt select it that easily into either high or low gears. Main gears on auto shift did'nt offer any type of wheel movement at all. What could it be? Transfer linkage, oil pressure?
I simply dont know.
My Tracker works though, they called me as soon as it was put onto the flatbed and pointed to the direction of the nearest landy workshop!
Does anyone have experience of this type of "quiet" failure. Do I buy the kids a new Discovery Gearbox for Christmas now.
Any help or advice will help me in this time of need.
Cheers

Could be quite a few things.
If the engine starts, then the torque Convertor back plate is OK, so that is ruled out.
If the oil cooler has split and pumped all the oil into the rad, that would lose the drive.
The Gearbox oil pump could have failed. The main shaft could have Failed.
Do they still strip the splines of the gearbox output shaft where they go into the Transfer gear? that used to be common.

Looks like either the oil pump, main shaft or gearbox output shaft.
I'll know once the main dealer has dropped it out in the morning...ouch!
My back pocket is begining to hurt at just the thought of it all!
My kids are looking more likely to get one of the above components for Christmas now!

If its the output shaft you will be a happy man as shaft is about £40 and 1 hour to fit, but i remember looking at the output shaft on my old 98 auto at 100k and it was perfect.

Oh my god! The oil pumps gone, which in turn has cracked and bent the drive plate.
A grand total of £1200......lifes so hard sometimes

Can you believe it...the same has happened to me this morning :(
However...there is a BIG oil leak which I assume is the source of the problem. There is oil mist all over the back of the car - window, step, spare wheel!! The oil smell in the car was a bit overwhelming so I can only assume some major seal has gone or that a drain plug has fallen out. I've read somewhere on these forums that the hypoid gear oil in the transfer box whiffs a bit
I've only just been recovered home (200miles!!) so I've not had a chance to look at what has gone
Has anyone any ideas??? The only clue I had that something was amiss was the smell of oil and the fact that the torque convertor wouldn't kick in on the motorway the evening before...I've never known the auto to rev to 4K before  . I got to my destination last night, but no movement this morning. All sounds OK (no bags of spanners) but there is no drive

Cant help you on this one, mine did'nt leak any oil, nor did it smell of anything. Sounds like your oil pumps blown and maybe blown a seal.
When was your Gear Box oil changed? Was it over filled, daft question really as how would you know if it's leaked. Over filling the oil is a cause of failure though.
Dont take to a Main Dealer as I did. Go straight to your local Transmission specialist...they will be more knowledgeable and a lot lot cheaper!

It could be just as simple as a cooler pipe cracked and spraying out.
I would wait for a diagnosis when the Garage looks iunderneath.

What's the chances of the gearbox being OK after being driven for about 100 miles with no oil?

Can I just re phrase that please.
Make sure you go to the RIGHT local transmission specialist. We used one for a previous car and they were useless. My wife in the end refused to drive the car, and after their last attempt at repair,I just drove it to the local auction and sold it for half what it was worth.
Dont take it that cheapest is best.

Got it back today at 9am....LR Dealer used local specialist to undertake works due to state of drive plate which prompted other potential issues.
Parts = £250
Labour = £750
The rest = VAT
Dealer managed to damage CO2 sensor in process, so car was back in with them at 11:30am
One week of heatache, lack of knowledge, lack of parts and late delivery...and £1200 lighter.
Oil pump was the main culprit
However, on the bright side, gearbox feels and sounds better, and my wife and kids are happy in having the old girl back!

Chances are good, My M3 was the same, drove it 75miles from work back to home....dropped oil all the way along the A1 and lost drive whilst pulling up at home. Took it to BMW, they fixed the pump and topped it up again!
Big bill once again, but no other damage!
We'll all say a prayer for you tonight.
Good luck

Hi, just done a quick credit check on the above Co. and all appears ok on financial side of things which is a good sign of a reliable company.
I'll check with my plant manager on monday, he'll know for any work we've had done on our rangers in that area, and if we've used them in the recent past.
