I thought I had left the spectre of Joseph Lucas behind when I swapped my Ser III for a 92 Disco but it seems not.

When I turn my lights on the side lights work fine. If I turn the switch to dipped nothing changes - still side lights. If I pull the stalk I can flash my main beam but pushing the stalk backwards does not turn main bean on.

Have I got a duff relay somewhere or is it just the stalk switch.....the weekend is just around the corner.

WHen this happened on my Defender it was the stalk switch - contacts had melted. Are you running spots or any other extra lights at all? That can speed up the melting process :D

Same symtoms that I had a while ago on my 300tdi defender. I did as Bernie suggests and looked switch first.

This did not solve the problem, it was eventually tracked down to one of the yellow relay blocks under the fuse panel. The internal shower system had corroded the contacts. Pull them out and check the condition - swap them about to see if they are all working (one controls the rear heated windscreen on mine).

Failing that, there is also another pink relay block behind the instrumment dash as well.

It was indeed a melted switch. The previous owner must have had spots on the bullbar (both gone now). The wiring is just about OK but the switch has melted contacts for the dipped/main. Looks like a parts order is needed.
