Over the last few days, my 2000 model manual TD5 has failed to start on first stab of the key. There is a clink or clunk from the engine bay and eventually after a couple of stabs it will start and then run as if nothing was wrong. It's internittent but becomming more frequent and ....annoying.
I plan on getting to the starter motor and loosening, greasing, retightening the electical lead contacts to it today.....but anyone else got any other ideas/suggestions?
BTW, the fuel pump can be heard and all the dash lights work as normal. battery is relatively new.
most prob. starter motor failure - we have had alot of these with earlier TD5's

RBM is right,it will be the starter. The solenoid contacts burn badly in them, cant understand why as the starter doesnt exactly have a hard life on a Td5,plus Denso electrics used to be good stuff on bikes etc - cant blame Lucas or Valeo this time.
sorry its a starter, I have tried to pull one to bits with out much sucsess.

Hmmm...looks like that warranty that was going to have an easy life till Dec 29th will have some work to do then. :-)

Starter a doddle to strip the contacts in the back of the solenoid will be burnt bad. had mine rebuilt by local guy for all of £25!

Booked in now for a new one. If it was after the warranty (just a few days left now) i would have done as lynalldiscovery suggested, but......hey......this is the first 3 month warranty I have EVER used....LOL.

All sorted. Was the starter motor.
Replaced (with original land rover part) at local non Landy garage under warranty.
