View Full Version : Becker Sat Nav
Hi All,
I've recently bought a 2002 Discovery II ES with a factory Harman Kardon system + CD changer. I'm thinking about fitting a Satnav/Bluetooth system, and I'm considering the Becker units cos they were fitted by the factory.
Does anyone have experience of fitting the Becker Traffic Pro 7945 or know if it's compatible ?
Would I need to upgrade the CD changer too ?
Also, what additional adaptors/connectors would I need in order to retain existing steering wheel controls for CD/radio, and the 3rd row consoles (blue panels with headphone socket, volume control and mode switch) ?
Thanks in advance for any help or advice.
Cheers,
Nick

Buy a Tom Tom.. the becker unit is rubbish.
But a Tom Tom.. the becker unit is rubbish.
I agree. Disco has a factory fitted Becker. I've also got a HP 4700 PDA with a tom tom fitted.
Use the Becker if sometimes I don't take the PDA and curse regulary at the poor display and time for it to plan routes and re-route. I've got an fm modulator fitted so with my 1 gig card I can play mp3's, the satnav cuts in over them, it works through the radio and amp, steering wheel controls work the volume etc and it still mutes for the telephone. Found recently I can put DVD on it too in mp4 format and the sounds great through the system.

you would need a new multichanger priced at approx £180, the steering controls will not work and you can not buy an adapter also you will be unable to control the bass bin volume, Been there done that got the t-shirt, a set of controls that don't work and a l/rover multichanger that is also redundant..... only bonus is, the dvd player for the headrst screens fits where the multichanger was.

Thanks for the replies.
I'd rather have a built in nav unit than something stuck to the screen, but really want to retain the steering controls and multi-cd facility if I can, and I'm prepared to change the auto-changer if necessary.
What about the original factory fitted Becker - I know it doesn't have Bluetooth but presumably that worked with standard steering controls and multi-changer ?
Any other recommendations or experience of suitable systems ?
Thanks again.

But the TOM TOM can be used in all my vehicles... including walking... much more useful..
The becker unit really is rubbish - you'll get lost. It gets lost on motorways! Really, I've driven a 2004 RR at length with the unit... and for a £55K vehicle it was laughable, the 200 quid TOM TOM beats it in every dept... It can't find more than 4 digits of postcode, the map is 3 years old, it has no panning and no 3D view.
Just warning you of the impending expensive dissappointment.

Not wishing to "gang up" Nick, but I must say that the Becker system is a pain to operate, out of date and has a very poor display. You'll need to install an external aerial too!
I've taken the wrong turn too many times with it (probably used it for 3000 miles in all), been sat waiting at the next set of lights or roundabout with it only displaying "calculating route" or "off road" (where the map is out of date and there is a new road layout).
I've made a bracket for the tom tom PDA and mobile phone to avoid it being stuck to the windscreen.
My origional fitted becker does work the steering wheel controls/ multichanger but as I say, with a modulator the a PDA will work with the amp/ steering controls too!!

Hi,
I've ripped all my kit out of the Disco II, and replaced it with a full multi-media kenwood system with a hard wired Kenwood/Garmin sat nav unit....the result...TV, DVD, IPOD, Sat Nav and 5 screens...all for £2500...perfect for me, the kids and my long journeys!
Over the top price wise, but better than anything else I've ever had!

only the becker 4765 works with the landrover kit, something to do with the software, they are always on ebay, latest updates are easily available. My becker Indianapolis pro was installed a couple of months ago, i have never had a problem with the sat nav, not as good as tom tom visually but works well.

Garmin / Tom Tom's are so cheap if you search around on line...<£200 for UK mapping.
However, great advantage of the Becker is that it mutes the radio when it's giving directions. I was trying to work out a way to do this with a Garmin/Tom Tom unit as the kids always have the radio blaring!!!
That being said, the one factory fitted to my courtesy Freelander last year would have got me hopelessly lost (and that was just getting off the M60).

My 03 ES has the becker unit, this really is way out of the ark, although as i never use nav. I'm a complete tyro on these things. Arial packed up a bit ago, the only thing that I'm really miffed about is the compass needle thingy display no longer works. Completely useless but a nice gimmick.
My advice - Don't bother, do as everyone here says & get a modern unit. Or a map.
