Under the passenger seat is the place for it to go.Check out www.myfreelander.co.uk for some good info.
I've fitted Sat nav and CD-changers to several freelanders, so feel free to pm me if you have ANY questions, but for starters here goes.
The installation is relatively simple.
The CD changer is under the passenger seat on all models up to and including 01MY, then from 02MY onwards LR switched the CD changer to be under the drivers seat (just for fun!;))
The unit is secured by two bolts facing forwards (7 or 8mm can't quite remember), disconnect the connector at the rear of the LR CD Changer and slide the unit towards you.
Fitting the phillips changer may be more interesting if you want to use the original mounting rail, otherwise bolt it into the carpet on the passenger side. (the drivers side has the rear passenger vents, and then a load more plastic on top which houses wiring for the seats
You will need to lift the carpet in order to run the optical cable to connect to the head unit (now are you planning to change the head unit too?).
I have detailed instructions on the removal of the trim if you want?
As for earthing points there are two at the front, one in the passenger footwell and the other in the drivers footwell.
