Hello everyone...
I have excellent news for African Land Rover enthusiasts. Kingsley Holgate has just announced that he and his family intend to embark on a new adventure. They will start the new adventure on 25th April 2007 (Africa Malaria Day) in Cape Town.
The aim of the new adventure is to circumnavigate the continent of Africa by vehicle, starting and ending in Cape Town, going clockwise. Aside from the pure adventure of the trip, they intend distributing thousands of mosquito nets (thereby saving countless lives), as well as become involved in primary health care and eye care programs all over Africa.
They will be sponsored by Land Rover SA, Captain Morgan Rum, Motorola, Grindrod Shipping and several other sponsors, but a lot of their expedition is self-funded, and done for the sheer passion for adventure and humanitarian assistance.
Now, it's time for us Landy lovers to pitch in and get involved. For the launch of the expedition, Kingsley would love to try to break the Guinness World Record of 260 Land Rovers in a convoy. Details are being worked out, but the preliminary plan is for the expedition to set out from Cape Town on Africa Malaria Day, and proceed with at least 260 vehicles, 230km up the coast to Clanwilliam (http://www.clanwilliam.info) where the participants will camp, party etc. The 25th April is a Wednesday, but it's quite convenient that Friday the 27th is a public holiday, so the perfect excuse for a long weekend. It's sure to be a complete jol*. Kingsley and his wife Jill are genuinely warm and fantastic people with such a deep love of Africa and adventuring that they inspire everyone they meet.
What I need is to start getting a list of people who, in principle, would like to be involved. I'm definiely going down for the launch, and I'll probably join the expedition for the first leg through South Africa, Namibia, and into Angola. I'm sure that forum members in Cape Town will be available to spread the word, and it's would be great to get a contingent of forum members from Gauteng and other parts of the country involved.
It would be FANTASTIC to get some forum members from outside Africa down for the event, so put your planning caps on and see if you can join us. You don't have to come by Landy. If you are planning a holiday in Africa, you are more than welcome to join me for the trip down to Cape Town, and beyond...
Please PM me if you're interested, and if there are any queries or comments, please post them to this thread.
* Jol is Afrikaans for a good time, having a gas, partying etc.
Count me in for the convoy. My wife hasn't got her training schedule yet for April so when that happens it might mean a change of plans, but for now it's on and I'll get some practice in drinking Cpt Morgan :party2:

Great stuff Kevin,
I told Kingsley that I'd be able to get a Gauteng contingent together for the launch, and it'll be a pleasure to have you along.
I'll keep you in the loop, and if you know of other people who might be interested, please let me know.
Of course, it's Landrover ONLY for the parade. LR are a major sponsor, so it wouldn't do to have other marques there.
Cheers,
Marc

This sounds great, we'll try and be part of the "outside Africa" contingent.

Goes without saying :) . I think it'll be great. I'll speak to the Chairman of the Land Rover Owners Club and that should probably get quite a few more.

Are you guys going to be down here?

Thanks Kevin,
An organised contingent from here would be quite a ccool idea. Can you imagine... a string of 20 or 30 (or more if possible) Landy's making it's way along the highway from Jhb to Cape Town :D The filling stations along the way will love it 'cos a landy uses a lot of fuel in 1600km ;)
As soon as I know more information about the organisers of the do, I'll get it to you.

Hi Marc,
further to our conversation on the phone earlier.
What a great idea!
There should be dozens of people here at the central coast and from inland who would visit such an event and even drive for a stretch along the Namibian coast. Lets see if we can top (up) your South African convoy... ;)
The only real "problems" that I envisage in Namibia are getting the permits to travel through the restricted diamond area and the northern part of the Skeleton Coast National park. Considering the humanitarian aspect of the expedition, I am however positive that we should be able to achieve something with the Ministry of Environment and Tourism and with the Ministry of Mines and Energy.
If anybody has Mr N. Oppenheimer's private number, that could be of assistance as well.
Please give Kingsley my regards, we will gladly assist with details on the southern Angolan part up to Benguela / Lobito, and I have a very good contact for the northern part of that country.
Lets keep each other updated.
Cheers Frank

Send me a pm with your email and cell no. I've spoken to the Chairman of the Land Rover Owners Club (Mike Ilsley) and although he already knows about it he wants to have a chat with you to co-ordinate things.

Can I cross-post this info to the ZA-LRO list? I'm sure we can rattle up a lot of support from the blokes!

Hi Michelle
I'd think no problem, as the more the merrier... At least at certain intervals like the initial departure stage or here at the central coast...
The diamond police will NOT be amused when we try to get "as many vehicles as possible" through the diamond area...
Cheers Frank
With so many landies together they'll look at the ground after we've passed by and think they've joined the ranks of the Arabs and struck oil.

A friend has just pointed out that with 260 Landies, 230km to travel - some will get there before the rest of us have finished topping up the oil! :D I presume us Series folk will lead from the rear.... probably arrive a day late.
Would we be an environmental hazard I wonder, warrenting a clean-up operation of the direst urgency? Or would Shell think they've suddenly struck a market boom as every petrol station in Cape Town runs out of engine oil? :)
Time to buy shares in Shell oil then quickly before April. :)

230km! How many times do the V8s have to stop for petrol along the way? :p

Ill be part of the JHB contingent driving the 1200 odd km down to Cape Town for the start of the record attempt. I was also part of the record breaking feat in JHB a few years ago where the record for the most number of Defenders in one spot was broken. Gotta love it.

Hello all,
I just received the information I requested from Guinness.
The procession needs to travel only 2 miles (3.2km), and there must be a maximum of two vehicle lengths between vehicles. All vehicles must be badged as LANDROVER, so I have asked for clarification as to whether Range Rovers are alowed.
Kingsley's idea is to take as many vehicles as possible to Clanwilliam, but the actual record attempt will probably be only a short drive somewhere near/in Cape Town.
The drive to Clanwilliam is really just for the fun of it, and apparently there is an enormous campsite there for people who want to spendthe night, drinking Captain and Coke, and having a braai.
Regards,
Marc

Marc,
Please count me in.
I also need a volunteer to drive the 110 and another to drive the IIA (if I still have it at that stage).
Marc -
Do you know if the Holgates will be travelling through Botswana (perhaps on their return leg)? If so, we'll need to see if we can organise Landie owners at this end.
Cheers.

Hi Jode,
I don't think that they will be going through Botswana this time, as it doesn't have any coastline. I hope to be going down to see Kingsley sometime in early January, and see how plans are shaping up. I'll let you know.
Cheers,
Marc

I'm meeting with Kingsley this weekend to discuss all of these things. BTW, Kevin, I spoke with Mike Isley from LROC about the event, and I'll be keeping him in the loop as well.

Hi Jan, good to have you aboard.
Watch this thread for updates...
Marc
hi guys.
been a long time since i visited here,i have been moving factory and house, talk about stress!!!
If anyone in the cape town area needs information they can pm me,i have the contact number of the cape organiser.
The transfer box has just gone bang on the discovery,it is being rebuilt at the moment(so much for having it serviced regularly, there was not a drop of oil in it!).
so i treated myself to a Rangie vogue, 7 years old with 85k km on the clock,(i checked where it was serviced, looks like it spent its life in Sandton)the thing is awesome....but so is the fuel consumption!
What is it about landies?this is number three standing in the driveway!
Dont i ever learn?

Marc, any update on this?

Welcome back YUG. I take it that you're in for the event???
Frank, I've been so busy over the past three weeks (been in Mozambique and Congo) and I've just returned from a 4 day Motorola conference, so I haven't been able to do much for Kingsley (I have however, managed to get him continued support by Motorola).
I will be focussing more attention to the event from Monday, and I'll be posting updates as things happen.
Cheers,
Marc

Hello all,
I have just been speaking with Kingsley, and things have changed a bit. LRSA feel that it could be counter-prouctive to advertise the launch of the expedition as a Guinness Record attempt in case something doesn't work or goes wrong etc. I agree with their reasoning, but have suggested that we should go for the record anyway, without focussing on the Guinness record. If we manage to break the record, that's 1st prize, but if we don't, then no-one will be disapointed.
We will certainly be setting our own record (read the blub below).
The date has been changed. The power that be would prefer to do the launch on the public holiday, so the launch date is now 27th April 2007.
The plan has changed a bit, and the Clanwilliam idea has been scrapped. Instead, we will do a route through from Cape Point along Chapman's Peak Drive and through Cape Town to De Grendel Wine Estate where frivolities and camping will ensue. Captain Morgan, Nando's, LRSA etc. will all be busy there, so expect a garlic, peri-peri and rum fuelled evening. :beers:
Anyway, here's the blurb, and I've attached a personal invitation to you from Kingsley.
Cheers,
Marc
Cape Of Good Hope Departure
Look and Feel Of The Land Rover Convoy & Launch of The Cape To Cape Expedition -The Objective Is Clear It Is To Succeed In The Longest Humanitarian Land Rover Convoy To Ever Leave The Cape Of Good Hope
09h00
All invited Land Rovers will gather at The Cape Of Good Hope site, 18° 28’ 26” East, 34° 21’ 25” South within the Cape Point Nature Reserve, through the park's gate one turns right just before the Cape Point Lighthouse, it will be clearly marked and marshals will direct the Landies. The Cape Of Good Hope is the most south western point on the African Continent, Here the calabash of seawater to be carried around Africa will be filled amidst traditional African song and dance. Convoy participants will get the opportunity to endorse the Scroll Of Peace and Goodwill which with their names will circumnavigate the continent around the outside edge to return to the Cape of Good Hope a year later on Africa Malaria Day, 25th April 2008. By adding their email addresses they will receive satellite messages from the outside edge so becoming part of this world first expedition. Each Land Rover will receive an expedition bag, which will contain sponsor giveaways and information, to include Cape to Cape logos for their vehicles.
10h00
The Expedition Landies lead the convoy out of the Cape Point Nature Reserve along Chapman's Peak Drive, through Hout Bay, past Llandudno, through Camps Bay around Green Point and onto Milnerton and finally the end point at De Grendel Wine Estate. We are going to keep the convoy close together whilst in the Park and down Chapman's Peak Drive (we will maximize photo opportunities in this section) but there will be convoy break up over the rest of the route. The convoy will reach De Grendel Wine Estate in the early afternoon (the Land Rover Club will run the convoy and give us exact timings before hand). Then commences the Expedition Jamboree.
13h00 Onwards
De Grendel Wine Estate has excellent security and a large open paddock, part surrounded by bush, you would never know that you were in the city. The area is large enough to cater for hundreds of Land Rovers and we can give it a true Jamboree feel with sponsor banners, a Captain Morgan bar, a Nando's Chicken Bar and individual braai fires all of which will add to the atmosphere. Each Landy must also bring and braai and if they wish they can pop up their roof tents and make an evening of it.
To Land Rover hooters and the flashing of lights from the well wishers The Cape To Cape Expedition Landies depart for their circumnavigation of Africa by land. Now they are on their own.
