Failed the MOT the other day - stupid little things that can be sorted easily/cheaply. However, the blo*dy thing wouldn't start and I had to be recovered - MOT blokes reckoned it was a dodgy relay (the one that sits on top of the fule pump). So, I was recovered to Alltracks 4X4 near Cradley... he'll sort pump/relay and get it through the MOT. He's also going to give it a full service - £250 +VAT  Does this sound excessive?

Depends what service it is, if the cambelt needs changing or something it will cost more than a standard oil change and spark plugs.

I would probably pay that if it was a full service and MOT!

I'm glad I haven't got a Freelander.
Seriously it doesn't excessive by UK terms and the astronomical hourly rates.
Given some of the other postings on this forum - don't forget to tell them to ring you about anything else.

Hi all,

Passed the MOT myself today (here in Belgium) and not a single remark, the Hippo ok and on the road for another year. I was a little worried about the tires (56.000 kms now) but they seems to be still ok for them. Anyway, if I had to have them changed I would have taken the BF Goodrich Macadam 215/65x16 98H, wouldn't have to look around anymore.

That sound about ball park for a non Dealer service on a TD4.

When you say it wouldn't start, what were the symptoms? Was it turning over but not firing? Had it been running okay up until then?

I would think we would charge somewhere in that vicinity, depending if we changed all the filters and breather.

Thanks. I'm worrying now as I forgot to mention I'd installed a K&N filter. He's also having to replace the fuel pump (the one under the bonnet).

Carl - I first experienced a loss of power on the motorway - dropped from 80-ish (overtaking, obviously) to 70 and had to keep my foot well done t maintain that speed (couldn't exceed 70). Couple of minutes later it kicked back into life. Next morning the thing wouldn't start on first turn and a strange whirring noise was coming from under bonnet. It seemed to turn alright but wouldn't fire. Happened to me again a couple of days later and started on 5th or 6th turn. MOT later that day and wouldn't start after they'd finished. Recovered to Alltrack 4x4 - he left it for a while, boosted the battery and it started 1st time! ANyway, he put it on diags and it read low fuel pressure. He's installed new under-bonnet pump and says it sounds/starts okay. Anyone know how much one of the under-the-bonnet pumps cost?

I agree, depends what service you have, but is there a belt on a 2002 td4?

No, the TD4 is a BMW engine with a chain.

Thanks all, picked the Freebie up tonight - £523.45 in total, that included full service, i.e., gear oil, oil change, filters, etc. + new under bonnet fuel pump + redressing MOT failures. All in all I'm quite relieved - I thought I was in for nearer to a grand. Blokey changed the pollen filter - apparently it was full of cr*p and it hadn't been changed since it the car was built. Maybe my heater'll work better during this ultra-mild winter we're having.

Jesus wept £ 523

There goes the rainy day ISA. £523 includes full service, fuel pump and labour at £32 per hour. Wonder how much a main stealer would've charged?

The price for a 36,000 mile service for a TD4 at the local Dealer last time was there was over £500. What I did notice was that the TD4 had the most expensive servicing prices of any of the other models.

When you take the Vat off, it's £445.48

The Fuel pump and MOT work taken off will bring the actual Service price down ( Did you have to pay the MOT Fee again)

If you break down costs, things can be quite reasonable.

We charge £38 an hour, that is the average up here, I would say.

I use Nene Overland and their prices are about the same. I had a 60k service with new discs and pads for a fraction over £400.
