Have only ever seen Roe deer around here until tonight.

Seen a strange (to me) small deer , round body with white streak of a hide from rear view (not flanks). Looked like a massive rabbit with that white bum and tail as it went off. Dog went right after it, let him run for few a sec then recalled him.

Later, leaving the area in the truck two of these deer where in the headlamps cross the road.

Looked online at pictures, and they looked like Sika deer but the ones I seen where too small. I don't think they where young sika as I never seen such small deer alone. These doe didn't look young.

Could be Muntjac? what other round shaped deer are there with a distinctive white bum in the UK?

This was down in the woods around Longleat. When I first saw (just the backside I caught sight of in dark) I thought it was a giant rabbit so then I thought escaped wallabee !:D

Was this the www that you looked at?: http://www.deer-uk.com/Deer.htm

Sika sounds like the closest to your description.

We had 100s of Muntjac on the estate in Newmarket, they're not too road-aware which is a shame.
Either that or the locals drove to fast, I believe its the latter

they did look like the sika deer on that site (the bottom two photos on the sika page) but weren't so big. I guess they might have been calf afterall, maybe seperated when we interupted them- just looked adult to me. Just know they were not the roe which we see everywhere here.
