I haven't heard of anyone fitting a different engine in a Freelander as yet. I don't think there is enough interest generated by them.
I'd like to put a Ford Pinto engine in one, just to see how it went.

Zetec would be better, and readily available management, but still not high torque
VW diesel maybe?

I'm not a big lover of Zetecs. I prefer the old 2 lt Pinto, dead simple.
The Duratorq from a Mondeo would be interesting. The 1.9 Vivaro/ Laguna engine is quite powerful.
I would think they will start to throw some interesting engines in old K Series Freelanders, when they get down to the few hundred ££s mark.

When??
A different reliable engine to replace the K 1.8.... I wrote a letter to santa claus about it.
Hundred types of petrol engines around, there must be one suitable for freelander.

I would think in a few years yet, George. They are still too expensive to chop about.
Old ones with blown 1800s will be cheap, they will probably get to the salvage value of the VC, Diff and IRD.

Turbo Diesels respond well to tuning. I've had a few TDs and fitted various makes of tuning boxes to them. Years ago I even had my old 200TDi Discovery "optimised" by Van Aakens with excellent results.
Once I've sorted the vibration isssues and had the cambelt replaced i'll be trying out one of these (http://45zs.info/Tuneam/tuneam.htm) on my 2.0L Freelander.
1998 Freelander... so an L Series Diesel.
As mentioned they respond well to tuning, and I can sort you out a 'remap' if your interested??

Why a4se about with a couple of bhp on an underpowered engine when the V6 is readily available and in standard tune has more power to weight than most LR...
New I6 engine sounds good on paper...give it a couple of years to prove itself and see what used price of them are....thats a transplant:D

You have a pm... well you will in min.

Personnally I find the V6 underpowered... and it means having an Auto.
To get the V6 to go, you have to rev it hard - and even then it is lacking in torque - infact the Td4 makes more torque at much lower revs... and the L Series isn't that far behind (and is more torquer when remapped) - in all honesty a tuned Defender Td5 will run circles round a V6 Freelander - as will a tuned Diesel Freelander.
Personnally... in a car this is ok, but in something that is used off road you don't want to be reving it hard to make it go.
For comparison:
V6 Power -
177bhp@6250
177lbft@4000 (torque)
Td4 -
112bhp@4000
192lbft@1750
2.0L Diesel
97bhp@4000
155@1750 (i think)
The I6 is ok... had quite a few new Freelanders at work (have done for the last year ;) ) Both the petrol and diesels are quite good.
With the original Freelander, it is the Drivetrain that is limiting factor, but there are other engines I'd consider before the LR/Rover V6.

I was going to send a pm re: price, but your profile is set not to recieve them...
Drop me an email at ibaughan@btinternet.com - and I'm sure we can sort something out...

Roverron is a good guy, very helpful and he knows his business.

Porny....Original post was without any reference to on/off road use therfore a simple solution to the problem is the V6...As far as
in all honesty a tuned Defender Td5 will run circles round a V6 Freelander - as will a tuned Diesel Freelander.
What a load of b0110cks...I can see your in the business of tuning diesels and can appreciate you may have a biased opinion but please dont try and state what is clearly wrong...
I agree (after having driven LR off road since late 70s) that it accepted that Low Revs and high torque is good off road, but that only really comes in when you are competing against mountain goats on their turf...for general off road use (greenlanes etc) there is no real difference between diesel or petrol.
V6 is an excellent motor off road as well as on...different style of driving and a bit sensible not to try and follow a lifted 90 where it clearly cant go, but for refined comfort and speed on road, an ability to cope with most terrain & without the truley horrendous MPG of a V8 disco defender or RRC I think you will find V6 one of the best LR products around.
Try one...
