How noisy should I expect the fule pump in the tank of a TD4 to be? Virtually silent I'd have thought. Mine sounds like a windscreen washer pump running so I'm thinking its faulty. What do you guys think?

If you can hear it when the engine is running, it's too noisey. It will fail, so get them to change it.

Well its not too obvious when the engine is running but its pretty obvious when the motor is sitting with just the ignition on but the engine not running. That's why I'm not too certain about it. It seems noisier than I'd have expected so I'll probably take it back yet again.

Definately the fuel pump and not the various electrical gizmos priming?

My neighbour had the same issue. When the ignition is on you can hear it ticking from the back of the car for about 20 seconds. He took his back to the dealership They checked it out and said it was normal. My TD4 however does not do this. His fuel pump is still okay a year later incidentally.

Well the noise comes from the area where fuel pump is located but to be honest when I took the wee access cover off to have a look, it wasn't obvious that the pump itself was making a racket. If someone told me there was another item nearby that was making the noise I could well believe that. Is there anything else in that vicinty though? It run for about 20 seconds and stops. I'd expect some detectable noise but this seems louder than it should be. Its more than ticking. Its just like the sound the windscreen washer pump makes in the old series landrover. Its no big deal though as its got a warranty so for once in my life it won't really be my problem. Its just the inconvenience of trailing back to the garage with it.
