:)

Hi everyone,

Bought myself a roof tent last year. Went on a 2 week tour all around the south coast of england. Was quite fun but looking for somewhere not too far from home but pretty interesting.

Might involve taking a short ferry. £ is a little bit of an issue. I bought the roof tent as I didnt want to spend another £500 on a s**t holiday sat in the boiling sun next to a pool BORRRRRRRED....rooftent=many hols which always include the Defender ;)

So, I need HELP. Any places where you have been and know of the rough £ for transport (if ferry).

Iceland has always been the dream but its just too expensive and Ive just bought a house and am pretty skint but can start to save NOW for the less extravagant trip. So,

France (northernish?:))

Sweden?

Great Britain !???

Inspire me please, before I hear "FLIGHTS TO GRAND CANARIA £459!!!"

Thanks folks,

James

Scotland - Western Isles
If you hear the words cheap flights to Gran Canaria just say we came back after 2/3 weeks in July and everyone thought we had been to canaries we were so tanned.
Caledonian MacBrayne (spell) ferry not cheap, but worth it to do the whole jaunt of the islands. We got a 19 day pass or whatever. One of our best holidays. A great book is Scottish Island Hopping.
If you don't want to pay ferry costs, even the north west coast of Scotland is so spectacular and coming further down, great campsites at Poolewe and Culzean, to name only two.
If you want different foreign culture ie France or Spain, both ok. Depends what you are after. A&K

Thanks folks,

JamesWe looked at going to Iceland after hearing excellent reports from our daughter who was working there. Can't remember prices but it wasn't too expensive. The main drawback was the time it took to get there and back. A two week holiday would allow you very little actual time there travelling from the SW.

We enjoyed touring the Scottish Highlands. We had a few opportunities to rough camp too.

Why not Ireland. Fuel is cheap and if you go off the beaten track theres plenty of places to stay. Most other things are abit pricey but the people are really nice. Id head for Cork/Kerry area.
The ferrys normally about £160 return.

switzerland aint to far. you could go through luxembourg and grab as much diesel as you can carry (within reason) and go play in the alps for a week or two. you could even do that hannibals road thing. lake geneva is worth a look as well.

I've had many excellent holidays in County Mayo and Wexford.

Playing in the local pubs and waking in the some locals house, many, many fun times.

Well Ive just come back from a month in Africa (Timbuktu and around)...

No Im back Im supposed to be thinking about doing proper work...Not where I can take myself next!!

la la la...Im not reading anymore of this thread!!!!!!!

...East Coast of Sweden, heading north & back down through Norway.... Easy ferry from Newcastle, or drive up through Europe from France to get the cheap and easy Dover-Calais crossing...

Whatever you do. Enjoy! Remember, Life's about the journey, not just the destination!

I would have to recommend the Western Isles too, or Shetland...ferry from Aberdeen overnight and then you are in the land of sheep and beer!! :D . There is a thriving Landy scene up there and I am sure you would be made welcome. If you timed it right you could be there for the Viking festival, Up Hellia. Its normally held in August, but book early for the ferry. On your way upto Aberdeen you could come up to Perth then cut over the Grampians (Glen Shee) and do Royal Deeside or head up the A9 to Speyside and do the Whisky trail etc.

People forget just how beautiful Scotland is and there are miles and miles of roads up through the mountains. Head way up North to Sutherland and you will think you are the only person left on the planet! :)

shetland (lerwick) return from aberdeen is in the region of £400.iceland return via scrabster returning to lerwick is £1000 (ish) then the single from lerwick to aberdeen £££ the only ferry to iceland from the uk is smyril-line (i'm trying to book with them) they are making booking from the uk difficult and their system won't even take lerwick bookings at the moment. i plan to spend a week in iceland in the summer (it's either 1 week or 3 due to the sailing schedule and i don't have 3 weeks plus 3 days sailing) and its proving a 'mare to book.
the west coast can be fantastic. try heading for oban, taking the callymac to mull (craignure) spend a few days on mull then cross from tobermory to kilchoan (ardnamurchan) then east to salen and go either north towards arisaig , (nice but can be quite busy) or further east and take the corran ferry from which you can go either towards fort william or glencoe, or drive past the ferry and take the road round to the head of loch eil.either way i'm sure you'd enjoy it and the ferries aren't too expensive (apart from oban-craignure) check out caledonian macbrayne's website for details. the corran ferry is run by the council and runs every 10 minutes or so (check for sunday's ) and costs a couple of quid.

:yay: Mayo I used to live there.....bit wet this time of year mind :D if you go to Mayo take the back roads to Galway not the main road (N17) the back one takes you through the mountains....great lanes round there too ;)

The coastal route from Galway to the bottom (bantry bay) is fantastic!! I did it in a focus last year and did the whole western side of ireland..
Achill is really nice as well, quite rugged and twisty windy roads :)

You should do a poll on it. On current postings, it looks like Ireland (West Coast??) or West Coast of Scotland. Just remember if you go the Ireland route you have to notify your insurance company. My brother did it and had to pay 200 quid:eek:   for a week's "free" (ie no accommodation costs) holiday. When we went we er.....didn't realise....

I thought Ireland was nice, with some beautiful bits, Sligo, Connemara, some great one-horse towns. The people were really friendly, and it rained, of course. The sun shone, but it was never hot, don't rush out for new swimwear. (That wonderful soft rain - said with Irish accent). The Keeper of the Purse would say Scotland every time. We have had some of our best holidays ever there. To be fair, any problems with the vehicle and there would be a queue of people offering to help (it did have a Scottish number plate mind...), the weather was brilliant and the scenery was superb. We only ever needed trousers and shirts at night for the midges (but you get those in Ireland too..) :D :D :D Adrian

they could have free camping at my mums in Mayo :D:D....

I thought someone said that most insurance policies cover you in the EU (third party..) is this wrong?

adrianandkate

No, just don't make assumptions that yours includes the cover. Easy enough to forget to check. I know!

Bu&&er! I was planning to drive over next year to see the folks (and have a play on my dads land :D:D) with the ferry that'd be nearly 400quid  and then deisel on top :( grrrrr I hate insurance companies

That's a very kind offer Wildrover883 , but I think he may have taken his holiday by now.;) Don't be surprised if you don't get a reply from him. The original question was asked over 2 years ago and he hasn't been around here since last summer.

Well if people want to consider mini expeditions, Eastern Europe is a great place. People are friendly although English is not often spoken amongst the older people there.

Baltic countries are good as well for a couple of weeks trip.

Scandinavia is also good although slightly longer times of 3 to 4 weeks are needed for a mini trip.

OK original post might be a couple of years ago but people are always looking for ideas.

Regards

Brendan

wildrover883

I think going through Hungary and Rumania would be the shortest route , but you could take a slight detour through Poland , if you want to , or if you are really crap at map reading....Poland has some lovely countryside , the food and beer is cheap and good , and you can camp at my place for free if you pass this way...I am about 130 kms from the German border , so at the north western side of Poland....

I always check the thread even if I set it up 2 years ago :) I think the online term is 'Lurking' haha

Every year is a new one! :)

I have a two week holiday coming up in a few weeks. I'll take a UK one then as a warm up, then in the summer holidays I'll be talking a long one. A month or so :) Keep them coming !

You would be welcome here , lots to see in this area , not so far to the Baltic coast , lots of pretty lakes and forest...I am actually in Drawski national park , so its quite pretty here , and i have plenty of space for camping , having a barbie , and the neighbours are not near enough to be bothered by a bit of noise....The last lot of Landrover people who were here were a party of Germans in Poland for the first time , and on route to the Zakopane mountains...they loved it here...If you want to check out your map , i am actually on the 173 route between the towns of Drawsko pomorskie , and Polczyn zdroj , the nearst town to me being Ostrowice...
If you cross the border at Szczecin its not so far to my place , and i can meet you on the main route so you don,t have to find your way through the smaller roads...
Mind you , if you got as far as Ostrowice , and asked where does the English guy live..? somebody would tell you....

Well I think you have missed the most obvious place.
I am on the bones of my bum at the moment and our 9 year old son wants to go on an expedition so we are going to Wales on a lads and Dads camping trip loads to do and see, quiet and lively bits.
Oh we even built a truck on the cheap, tent reduced from £40 to £4, full awning now this took a lot of thought and time to design with out spending a fortune, but we did it for £2.91
And yes its a Vitara ,well I just could not get a Landy for £300
It even has a fold out kitchen

Perhaps they are holding your passports hostage...?
