Who's got a gun case in the Landrover and what make or how do you carry yours?

Is it legal to leave a gun in an unattended vehicle in the UK?

I've made a wooden case that covers the whole of the floor area in a defender. It has two draws both lined with foam, and there's another area with lift off tops to cartridges etc.

The whole thing is painted black, so when you look into the vehicle it looks like the floor.

I use it when transporting shotguns as the are out of sight from anyone looking in.

As for leaving guns in parked vehicles, well I surpose it depends on how much you value your certificate

Hope this helps

Doesn't bother me one bit at all... ;) I was just wondering what the law was in the UK. Over here it is totally illegal to leave a gun in an unattended vehicle unless you have a properly certified safe mounted in the vehicle, and even then it's still a moot point.

Perhaps our rate of vehicle theft is so much higher than yours that we need a law like that, however I'm surprised that the strict gun control laws in the UK don't specifically state where you are allowed to keep a gun.

Looking at the Police advice Marc, it looks like you can;

When travelling in a vehicle, keep your guns and ammunition out of sight, preferably in the locked luggage compartment. It is preferable to keep the guns in their slips or cases.

If you have to park your vehicle for any reason, ensure the guns are stored as above, and park the vehicle where you can see it if at all possible. The vehicle must be locked, and any anti-theft devices set. It is a good idea to park in such a way as to prevent easy access to the part of the vehicle containing your guns, such as backing the car very close to a wall to make it difficult for a thief to get at the boot.

Where possible, remove the fore-end of the Shot gun and take it with you. There are also various security devices that can be used if necessary.

Good grief  I thought the UK was serious about controlling guns! Or is it about controlling gun owners?

Thanks for the info. At least I know I can leave my Glock in the glove compartment in London now...as long as I set the alarm... ;)

Ah well, different countries have different laws I guess....

That sounds like a very interesting piece of kit. Would it be possible for you to take a few photos of the safe and post them here? I'd really like to get a good look at it.

Im sure Mr Plod would have something to say about that :)

Jumped in the back of a car before and sat on this chaps rifle, hidden under a blanket.. Not very secure IMHO. Also have a mate who has a few rifles/shoguns in his hous ein the middle of town, massive gun cabinet bolted to the wall... Took my ex there before and she was a little scared when we told her wha was in it.. City folk :D

South African gun ownership law has changed recently, and all existing owners must re-apply for licensing, and have to do competency and proficiency tests before making application to re license.

In principle I have no objection to the procedure, and I welcome any serious efforts at gun control. I can't understand why Granny Smith should have a licensed Desert Eagle unless she can prove thet a) she can use it safely, b) it is securely stored when not in use, c) she actually needs it.

Previous gun laws were so lax that many completely unsuitable people legally obtained all sorts of guns.

I have been re issued with all licences without any hassle after I completed the application forms and submitted a letter of motivation explaining why I needed the guns that I own.

However, to highlight a certain level of paranoia in the country... Part of the re licensing procedure is to have the police inspect your mandatory gun safe. The local firearms inspector made an appointment with me to inspect the safe. He certified that it was securely mounted and was satisfied with it. As soon as he left the house, I moved the safe to another room.

I have inherited two more guns (SBS 12 gauge and 9.3 x 62 Mauser) from my girlfriends late father, and getting them licensed is going to be fun :(

I took this photograph in Mozambique. Have a look on the floor of the passengers side

Hi Marc

Sure...attached is the pic that appeared in the 2001 Disco II accessories catalogue (Pub No LRML 1653).

Part number is STC8018AB plus the adapter plate kit STC50076.

The guy who sold me mine on ebay had barely used it so the safe was perfect. Certainly gives me extra piece of mind (and the unit can be removed from the car when I'm not in it) and at least it means that I've done everything possible to protect the guns from undesirables...I also take the forend with me, even when the guns are locked up.

Have seen a couple pop up on ebay from time to time...worth it if you can find one but the last one went for around the £200 mark - I reckon I just got lucky when i saw mine.

Thanks for the photo. It looks like an elegant solution for the Disco. I must find the time to do something similar in my Defender. One of my clients/suppliers manufactures waterproof aluminium cases and enclosures and they do a range of custom-built lockable gun cases with foam padding etc. I think I'll ask them for advice on a removeable "gun safe".

i have always wanted to get the gun rack that landrover sell that clips onto the dog guard. But i would have to be a total idiot to drive around the roads with my gun on show! just love the idea of it lol. Guess they make it for game keepers.
