I inherited a Spanish side-by-side, started shooting with it and it used to beat me up, I used to go home after a days clay shooting with a swollen cheek and bruised shoulder. I couldn't hit much with it either.
I got myself a Beretta over and under that fitted properly and even if I say so myself, I am a pretty good shot. After a good few years shooting now, I can pick up the side by side and shoot pretty well with that too.
Make sure the gun you have fits you properly and that you are holding it properly. It is well worth getting some good advice from a gunsmith or somebody experienced who can watch you shoot some clays and tell you what you are doing wrong and right!

Are your eyes OK, are you shooting using your dominant eye looking down the rib? Most people are right eye dominant and right handed. As Jim said, get a Gunsmith or shooting instructor to check your gun fit and then gun mount. Have a couple of lessons - well worth it as you'll get a payback in fewer wasted cartridges. At a clay-shooting ground, just practice on hitting one easy 'bird' say a slow crosser, until you can hit it 10/10 it helps you to build up the correct 'picture' you need to see for that type of 'bird' Then move on to other types of target.
I have a S/S as well as an O/U and you do need a slighly different technique to shoot with a S/S.
Welcome to the best sport of all!
