Tahnks for all your replies, sorry I couldnt respond...have been away at work all week. Have reposted original for ease of understanding and updated the info after a bit of diagnosis:
DISCO 1995 300 TDI
Driving on the motorway last week, there was a quiet tapping sound coming from roughly underneath the vehicle. This got louder and more frequent (approx. 1 "tap" every 0.5 sec) This lasted for about 30 secs, and I began to slow down to pull over when the engine died completely. This happened without any loud noise or bang at all.
The vehicle now refuses to turn over with symptoms listed below:
- when the key is turned, the starter motor clicks, but fails to turn over
- there are no obvious signs externally on the engine and the oil level is still healthy
- water levels are all healthy
- tows / free wheels fine
- the engine turns over when pushed and in gear (so not siezed)
- belts are all okay.
- battery good; however;
- have tried jump leads in case of battery, no joy, still the starter motor just clicks, as if trying to turn then stops.
Is this simply the starter motor now? And if so what accounted for the engine stalling in the first place...alternator aswell?
