I purchased a discovery and unfortunately we do not go by the year in my country. I would like to find out what series land rover I own so I can shop for parts. Below are some details:
Engine: 3.9 V8i
Seating: 7
Fuel: Gas
Transmission: Auto
It looks similar to the following picture:
http://www.goldfish.org/~mcooper/disco/mid_disco1.jpg
The picture shows a series 1 disco.
To the uninitiated there is visually little to differentiate between the series 1 and series 2 but, if you know your Discoveries they are very different indeed......no panels (other than the rear door, I believe) was carried over from the series 1 to the series 2....the most obvious giveaway being the door handles. The series 1 used 'British Leyland parts bin' handles as fitted to a variety of 70's and 80's BL cars. The series 2 used more substantial 'proper' handles.
Here is a piccie of a series 2 off the net......

looks just like my 1996 discovery 1, although to be sure, you may want to copy down the VIN number and go to carfax.com and type in the vin and it will tell you the make and model for free. All 1995 thru 1998 models are the same series 1...G'day~

Kashdaddy........I would say put up some pictures of your car and take it from there. Internal and external.
There are so many mix and match parts that are swapped over by previous owners to create a more upto date look for their car that it's quite easy to make an early series 1(200series) look like a late model 300 series.
Biggest visual givaway is the change from small headlights over the larger ones.
Best way to check any LandRover is to find the VIN number and put it into CALVIN. This gives an exact breakdown of your car, when it was made, original specs of running gear and engine etc.
What country are you in?
Regards.

First thing I look at is the rear lights, if they are near the bottom at the back its a disco 1 if they are half way up then its a disco 2 unless someone has done some serious modding:D

Please correct me if I am wrong!!

Series 2 interior:
53641
Series 1 interior:

Ermmmmmmm sorry edit last post....... all your pics are of a 300tdi vs a 200tdi which is not the same as a series 1 disco vs a series 2 disco........ the bumper, bonnet, headlights, indicators and wings all different on series 2. The interior is just about the same from a 300tdi to a series 2 but I think there were some very minor differences. The pics you show are a face lift series one;) (pic from google again)

I think mine is a discovery 1 since the engine number begins with a 36D.
I did run the VIN on carfax, but it could not find a match since i guess mine is in south america as opposed to north america.

You generated quite a thread over series, nice work.
You didn't miss anything major, just keep an eye out for the
reservoir tank and its connections, these things get brittle in
hot climates, although I know lttle about S. America's climate,
but keep an eye on er and have many safe and frutiful adventures,
these old gals are a kick!!!
