View Full Version : Shake at 75mph+

My 2001 TD5 auto has developed a shake / shudder whenever I go above about 75mph (about 2800 to 3000 rpm). I haven't pushed it much above 80 but the faster I go the more obvious it becomes.
From reading other threads with similar symptoms the recommendations have been been to look at wheel balance first, and then look at the suspension. (The front tyres were replaced about 2000 miles ago and the balance weights all look to be intact).
Does this sound about right? and what based on experiences would you all think is the most likely culprit.
Thanks

My car does have the shakes below 70 also, it's just that they are much more noticeable at a higher speed.
I've spent many an hour (days/weeks even) on UK motorways and at 70 it feels like everyone is overtaking you.:)

I have had the same problem mine was due to the tyres going out of round a common problem with some type of tyre apparently.
Get your local tyre dealer to put them on the balance machine and spin them up then watch the tread from the side and see if it has gone out of shape.

Check your prop shafts UJ's and the rubber donut joint - these can cause vibrations right through the car if they are worn or faulty.

Does sound like a balance issue.
And Satancom, know what you mean there!!!

Thanks all,
I had the balancing checked on the front wheels at the weekend. Both were out, O/S by 50 grammes, N/S by 15 grammes. This has had a big effect, the car is much smoother :) . The vibration has not gone completely, maybe it was there all the time and I didn't notice it, or the rears need checking as well (one of them is apparently wearing unevenly which could be a contribution).
Apparently my tyres were all over inflated as well. So - in the bin with my pressure checker - I'll need a more accurate one.
