Had my first experience of clay pigeon shooting at the weekend, and have to confirm I'm well and truely hooked!

Could anybody suggest any clubs, contacts etc in the Northants/Bucks/Beds area where I could take a more active interest in this sport?

Thanks for your help.

Got my first six, missed a couple and then got my eye in. Instructor kept swapping to 'test me', one up, one left, two left, up and left at same time etc.

Got a nice bruise though!

Used to be a member of the NFAS, and shoot in the Hunting Tackle Category. Still find archery relaxing, but would like to get into clay pigeon.

Fun isn't it!

Not my part of the country but do a web search or buy a copy of Shooting Times or Sporting Shooter, they list a lot of clubs and shooting grounds.

The clay pigeon shooting fraternity here are advising people to NOT refer to the passtime as Clay Pigeon Shooting, but rather as "Clay Target Shooting".

Gun ownership is under growing pressure from the anti gun lobby, and it was felt that using "target" instead of "pigeon" removed the hunting aspect, and also made the target inanimate, thereby showing that the sport was not related to any blood sport, and that there can be no confusing of Rock Pigeons with Clay Pigeons.

It's all really stupid though. Guns were designed with one purpose: to kill things. Clay shooting is geat fun, but it is a sport that evolved from shooting real pigeons, and there's no getting away from that.

So now, sporting bodies have to pretend that shooting is PURELY a skill-based sport, just to avoid angering the brainless bunny-huggers who feel sorry for "all those poor Clay Pigeons who get murdered each weekend."

Having said all that... any forum member who'd like to do some great wingshooting is welcome to come down here in season. There's a huge variety of good shoots, and a lot of well trained dogs available. We have francolin, spurwing, guinea fowl, rock pigeon, grouse etc. etc. etc. Have a look here (http://www.wingshooters.co.za/) if you're interested. They have some nice recipes too.

Cheers,
Marc

Thanks Marc, but as a bunny-hugging vegan I think I'll be sticking to the clay pigeon variety.

If however you could provide some human targets, I'd be very interested. MP's would be a favourite, followed by the Inland Revenue and the HSE.....

Ah, but you're not one of the "brainless bunny huggers" that I was talking about. ;)

Seriously, there was a group of protesters who thought that clay pigeons were a specific species of pigeon that was being slaughtered.

I purposefully use the term "bunny hugger" in it's derogatory sense, NOT to describe sensible people who love and respect animals and the enironment. I find that most of the people I consider to be worthy of the derogatory term are people who have an irrational, sometimes hysterical, response to the way that humans interact with the rest of our planet.

No offence meant towards you by the use of the term. I like bunnies too...:rabbit:

There's one prime target who lives about 1000km north of me, in a country called Zimbabwe. His name is Robert, and he's a bit loopy. If you'd care to do me a favour... I'd be forever in your debt. :D

Can never hit bolting Rabbits. My 1.5 hours shooting on a sunday morning is my best of the week, I get to drive me landy there, loads of abuse, hot tea and a bacon butty in winter..... perfect...

TBM,

The Oxford Gun Club (just outside Bicester) runs reqular novice and try out days, and the private club I am with also runs an open day once a year.

Come Spetember I will be getting my Clay range couse out the way so would be able to days like that myself.

Have a look on www.cpsa.co.uk (http://www.cpsa.co.uk) - they list many of the shooting grounds and their opening times.

The Oxford Gun Club has a good reputation, but it's not that close to you - have you tried Sporting Targets in Risley ?

I used to shoot at Sywell Clay Shooting club, it's on the A43 between Kettering and Northampton, near to Sywell funnily enough!:)

I have not been for years so I don't know any contacts anymore, they shoot every Sunday morning, I can hear them from home.

There is also a very good club north of Market Harborough, just before you get to Kibworth.

Maybe worth asking at Moulton Agricultural college, the chap at Market Harborough gun shop is very friendly and will point you in the right direction.

If I think of anymore I will let you know.
