......Just how many off road ready Disco's seem to be popping up at the moment.
I passed three this morning in the space of about half an hour, and I'm glad to say they all waved! Also saw two yesterday while driving from Lincoln to Nottingham in hubbies car.
The only reason I can think that they have become so popular is that you can pick a basic one up for next to peanuts, the mods cost no more than they would on a Defender and at the end of it all you have a vehicle capable of anything off road as well as suitable for taking the mother-in-law out in!

Another strange thing I saw the other day was an old Police Disco1, presume it was actualy being used as a patrol car as it was in full livery, flashy lights and all! haven't seen one of those for years, didn't think they still used them. Was so shocked at seeing it I didn't think to give them a wave

Like you say they can be picked up cheaply compared to the equivelent age Defender and have the same running gear and probably a chassis in better nick too. With a lift kit and a set of muds my Disco will do everything my 110 did off-road. (with the bonus of a heater in winter :) )

They are such a good buy at the moment.
£2500 will get you a 94/97 with a years mot and and it will last you Years .
as a preference i prefere the none complicated models 200/300 tdi's.
having said that if there was thirty grand in the bank no wife to complain what i was spending it "on" then i would go 4 the new sucker. what a machine.WOW.
Back to reality then.
30 to the gallon
loads of room and above all (Safe in an accident)

A new one would be great without the £400 road tax!!

Know what you mean about loads of off road ready jobbies hanging around, for me getting mine to that spec will be half the fun tho :p

As you say Gaz, all they really need is a lift and a decent set of tyres and away you go.
We've only done a few bits to ours, 2" lift and slightly bigger tyres which gives us 3-4" extra ground clearance, rock sliders, steering guard, A-bar and obviously loads of lights are a must! The only thing we really want to do now is fit a tank guard (who's idea was it to put a plastic fuel tank on a 4x4?) and a heavy duty rear bumper and possibly when we're a bit flush go for some 15" rims with some chunkier tyres.
We've only got stuck once in her, and then she was grounded in a deep rut. Had to get the local farmer to tow us out in the end, which he did quite happily, explaining that the lane was in such a mess as he had been using it as a short cut!!!
