I hope someone can help with some advice about the noise I am experiencing. It started this weekend from the nearside front wheel on braking. Sounds like grinding, and i was wondering if it some sort of brake pad wear indication. It doesnt happen all the time, but especially when braking hard, but only nearside, and only when braking.
Is there any way of checking pads without having to take wheel off?

I'd say the pads have worn right down so you are getting metal on metal and will now need to replace the disc as well, if it is badly scored.

Taking the wheel off isn't a huge job is it? ;)

As Bernie says. The front brake pads wear out quickly on the Freelander as do the discs. JAck it up and take the wheel off. You should be able to see the thickness of the brake pad through the slot in the caliper.

Thanks guys, does anyone know the part numbers for the td4? I can have a look on Ebay then. Thanks

Checked the pads today, well worn but not quite down to metal, discs OK.
Got Delphi Lockheed pads from autoquip for £36 inc VAT.
LR wanted £62, parts only. Couldnt find pads for td4 on Ebay unfortunately.
Pistons a bit stubborn to push back, but once moving went back easy, whole job took one and a half hours, I expect a mechanic could halve that! But as LR quoted £125 to fit I am happy to saved the best part of £90!

I checked the disc thickness and it was OK, although some wear present obviously, but no distinct scoring despite recent grinding noise. However I have changed the pads within 50 miles of the noise starting.
My car has done 36K, so I will change discs with pads next time, probably around 70-75K.
Presumably this is OK?
I always wonder whether garages (less reputable ones) state discs need changing just to boost income, what does the forum think anout this?

I always wonder - my first freelander a 1.8 had its front discs/pads replaced at 12,000 miles/1year

It may have been driven a little hard though!

My Rover 100 (1.1 K series) chewed up pads and discs like they were going out of fashion ... just about every service they got replaced, and on more than one ocasion they came back worse than they went in, and had to be replaced cos one or both discs were faulty out of the factory ...
