View Full Version : Loosing coolant
My hippo had HGF before xmas & had a new gasket fitted, last week I had a new expansion tank fitted. I topped up the coolant to max & done 70 miles & the coolant level has dropped to half way between min & max. No mayo on the dipstick or oil filler cap. I can hear slushing behind the heater when i start thew engine, this happened last time before HGF. I cant see any leaks in the engine.
Anyone any ideas as to why Im loosing coolant

Was the new type of head gasket fitted ? If there is no water in the oil and no external leakage then it is going out the exhaust pipe - simple as that,HGF or porus head etc.
The garage told me that the mastic in the new head gasket was alot wider than the original. if the water is going down the exhaust will there be alot of steam from the tail pipe

Did they skim the head?
Chris
It was sent to be inspected but didn't need skimming

I can hear slushing behind the heater when i start thew engine,
- Could be another hgf if they didn't the first one reverentially.
- Could be a heater core leakage. Check for wetness in the carpet around the heater.
- Could also be a problem with unsealed cylinder liners.

Mastic in the gasket ? The new one is a conventional composite gasket with a second coated shim, depending on the amount of coolant loss and engine speed /load you may or may not see steam. As Chris said was the head tested and or skimmed ? Were the liner heights checked ?

We always skim our heads. The Gaskets aren't very forgiving ( read that as a crap design) so even a couple of thou needs taking off to level them.

The head was tested but not skimmed. Nothing was said about liner heights. As it was only done before xmas would be still under guarantee or is there nothing wrong with gasket, is it a bad design? Shall I just keep an eye on water levels & wait for the inevitable

If its losing coolant I would get it sorted,it will only get worse or let you down right at the wrong time.
As Chris said the head face on these engines must be absolutely spot on flat. With the liner heights checked,(to ensure none have dropped) and the new gasket you may have a chance of it being reliable. The new hose/thermostat layout seems to help too. These engines need all the help they can get - anyone who works on them needs to know what they are doing and be up to date with the latest mods.

The liners should also be checked for possible unsealed-rotation, even if theyre all in the same height. That was the problem i had with my 1.8 engine actually.
