dear all

my 2006 freelander has now done 21,000 km. the tyres seem fairly evenly worn (fraction more at front) and the rear nearside tyre has some wear on the outside of the tyre - i may have done this getting very stuck in a ditch during the snow (this seems a long time ago given current weather).

anyway: should i be rotating the tyres? (there is a nice brand new one on the back door.) seems a pity to leave it pristine -is there anything against shifting them around? i forgot to mention this at its first service (which was done efficiently and priced reasonably by the lr dealer)

I don't. If you do you end up having to buy 4 new tyres at once.
However........
Tyres should be equal as poss on the same axle, so you can't put the spare on one side only.
New tyres/those with the greatest tread should always go on the back of a Freelander.

If the spare is A1, I would buy one new tyre and then put both of them on the back, and put the best of the two taken off as the spare.

I believe that Tyre Dealers now don't recommend "circulating" tyres.

As Graham rightly says, always put the new ones to the rear. The gearing difference will soon overload the VC if you fit new to the fronts.

From the Land Rover service check sheet

"Apply anti seize compound. Refit front road wheels to original positions and

rear road wheels to OPPOSITE sides of rear axle (Ref. Bulletin 0008 -
Suspension)"

This is done every 12k

ChrisAbsolutely correct in theory, but must admit had always put least wear on front to even wear out before hearing about this "theory"..never had a prob with vcu and mine does get some stick.

Maybe just lucky but still do it now 30k+ freebie ownership with no drivetrain probs at all.

ps it will probably go t1t5 up in the morning:)

i did mine when i 1st got it,mainly 'cos i'd heard it should be as quoted "biggest to the rear" but also i like to square off the ones from the front due to power steering scrubbing fronts in my opinion.i now have 2 even ones on the front which should be ok for a few months 2 40% worn on the rear which should "level off" soon and the baldest/oldest on the spare so that i can buy 1 new one when funds allow and then when the front axle set need changing i'll buy 1 more new put the backs on the front again and the new 2 on the rear and the best of the 2 worn on the spare and the cycle starts again......this way i never buy 4 in one go and i feel like i've "cheated the man" oh yeah!!:D
