Got a Td4 (54 plate)- whats the best option - plug in job or re mapping ? How's is the best to go for ? Most of my mileage is on motorways both in UK and Europe - want to get a better mpg and more umpf when pulling off.

The possible better mpg will be destroyed by the more umpf you know:) :) :) :)
(Mine is chipped and feels like a completely different motor but as one always uses the extra power there is no benefit in mpg, even the contrary...   ) but what a ride since mine is done in october 2001, both the engine and the autogearbox seem to like the extra power as both working more swiftly.
Willo is right, I tried a plug on box from roverron, this made a difference in the performance but the car clattered a lot more.
I removed and returned but had no end of problems afterwards, the car was very lumpy, very noisey, slow and used a lot of juice, in the end it need a full software reload. After this it was fine but the performance was just OK around town and poor on the motorway.
If you are going to do a performance enhance I would advise that you have it remapped, just from my experience, others may say otherwise.
Just swapped for an FL2 2.2 TD4 GS.

Well I know sod all about remapping of chipping but I have altered the settings on the injection pump in my series 3. What that amounts to is basically turning up the on-boost fuelling slightly across the whole rev range and letting the on-boost fuelling begin a bit earlier. Its a lot more driveable than it was so driving characteristics can certainly be changed by altering fuelling. But there's no free lunch. The downside is a bit more smoke, probably a bit more fuel used and, if I'm taking more power from the engine, it will be getting a bit harder a life and enduring higher cylinder temperatures at times.
I doubt you'll be able to scoot down the motorways with more power and more mpg but I do think the freelander could do with a bit more torque when pulling away though so I think I'd be increasing the low boost fuelling if I was the tweaking kind. But as I know sod all about remapping of chiiping, I have no opinion on the best way to go about it.

OK guys thats great - understand .... what you gain on the swings you lose on the roundabouts - interesting about bottom end and pull away - anything to improve the existing Td4 will help - seems remapping gets the vote rather than plug in - looking at Jeremy Fearn or JE - any views - who have you guys used ?

As said in my previous post mine is remapped (chipped) and has now around 140 bhp and has some 310 Nm torque. Much more relaxed driving now, even my wife as passenger only (never driving) feels the difference that both the engine and the autobox prefer the new values above the old ones. When you ask who we used I suppose you mean who did the mapping ? For me it was done near my place but too far away for you. (Belgium...:D :D :D :D )
