As a Professional Engineer in the railway industry AND a Landrover Enthusiast, I am always keen to see Landrovers in use in railway maintenance type applications. I'd like to know if there's anyone else out there who has such interests and has pictures of any specialised Landrovers?

I spotted this one in this month's RAIL magazine. It's Laser Gauging Vehicle (LGV) a road-rail adaptation of a Defender. It uses laser technology to measure structure profiles alongside the route as it moves along the track.

Somewhere.........I have a pic of a rail converted 130 crew cab that I used to see localy. I'll try to dig it out and scan it.

When I used to commute into Fenchurch Street from Upminster, I often thought it would be a great way to get into work. Do these vehicles ever come up for sale?
For those of you that know about the rail industry:-

1. How would you get out of the terminus (ticket barrier and escalators not wide enough) ?
2. Could you switch the rail wheels between insulated and uninsulated to confuse the signalman?
3. Would network rail charge you for "parking"?
4. Could you out accelerate any multiple unit when in insulated mode?

1. Pull off the tracks before you get to the station...
2. Uninsulated may give you a little shock... ;)
3. Well they charge the rail companies to store any trains within the stations, and pulling off the tracks and parking in the long stay carpark might be even more expensive.
4. I would have thought you could out run a multiple unit, though, I wouldn't try to do it with the 225 intercity, well unless it is on the west coast line of course, then anything can out run the trains on that line..

One question, do the Land Rovers get fitted with the cool and extremely loud horns that the trains get fitted with... ??
