Check that the transfer 'box is in either, Lo or Hi, and not magically jammed in neutral. If the lever moves through the Neutral gate with some resistance, you can assume that all is OK with the selector.
If the car still doesn't drive and it has over 50,000 miles then I would suspect that, the old favourite of the transfer box / main box coupling has lost its drive splines. That can be checked by removing the inspection plate [big circular one next to the handrake drum] on the transfer box. and with the engine OFF, the front wheels chocked, and the car in gear [say HI 2nd] watching as a rear wheel is turned. If the coupling is OK, then in theory you should not be able to turn the wheel very far, however if the coupling is goosed then the wheel will turn freely, and you should see the transfer box gear turning with the wheel, and the main gearbox output shaft remaining still.
If that is the problem then I am glad its your mates car and not mine as that can be expensive to put right [£800 - £1,000]

Is it making any noise when you engage drive?
