Black smoke

Has anyone got any ideas what would cause lots of black smoke on full acceleration?
Have new air filter already in and have just done tappets whilst fitting new cylinder head.

Black smoke is normal when holding full throttle.
It esp noticeable at night but can also be seen in daylight when accel real hard up to speed at high revs.
If it goes away when you cruise or lighty accel then ok.
