Some of you who have seen some of my projects are probably going to read this and think "is he going soft in his old age?".

No I'm not!

The backlight on the digital clock on my TD5 DII has stopped working. I studied the clock section in RAVE and checked fused 16 and 26 in the passenger compartment and both are fine.

It it possible to repair this, and if so how? Or should I go to the breakers and get a new clock?

Thanks

If it`s the same setup as the Disco1, Is it not just a small capless bulb that`s needed? Slip a couple of credit cards down the side to release the clips on the clock to get it off ... worth a try! ;)

I think the bulb is Part No. LBAU5311L

Had to do mine a few weeks ago, the way I did mine was to remove ashtray and coin holder, then unscrew the three screws on each side that release the drinks holder. With this out of the way you can get enough access to remove the clock and see at the back a small bulb. The bulb is standard and can be purchased for a couple of pounds from any spares shop.

I've tried the credit card trick. First I tried two expired South African cards, but we still have "zippy zappy" machines out here, so our cards are thicker than UK cards. I then went to my "UK Wallet" and chose to use my casino membership card and library card. I was tempted to use the photocard d/l but thought it better.

The thin UK cards slipped in nicely at an angle and I soon heard the click sound.

Now what?

I've got the ashtray out and the door switch cover off, but can't figure out how to get the unit to move forward! I tried to lever it from the top with my leatherman and then with a jeweller's screwdriver, but nothing. That thing isn't moving forward.

What's the trick to getting the clock / door switch pod to move forward?

By the way, a bulb that costs a couple of pennies in the UK, costs £2.98 here! I've found the BMW equivalent for about 50p - but that's at a dealership in Cape Town (1,500 miles away).

While we're on the subject of bulbs, has anyone replaced his or her disco dash lights with LED's?

To move the clock forward use at leat three cards - 1 on the right of the clock 1 on the left of the door locking switch and 1 at the top or bottom.Make sure you hear the click of the plastic releasing the clock and as you are doing this push the clcok from the rear of it.
(After a good few minute's I realised the clock and door locking switch come out together.)
I knew those point collecting card's would come in handy for something !
When it is out turn it upside down and you will see the rear of a small plastic twist type bulb. Turn it a little with a flat screw driver and it will drop out.
