Can anyone tell me if the cambelt has to be removed to change the water pump on a 300 Tdi?

No, the water pump is to the right of the timing gear. As long as the bolts all come undone ok, it's not a very difficult job to do.

Les, many thanks.

So does the water pump have to come off to change the cam belt?
And if I am changing the cam belt is there anything else I should consider changing?

You don't have to touch the water pump to replace the cam belt. When replacing the belt it's wise to use a kit, which includes the crank sprocket, tensioner, guide wheel, timing cover gasket, and a bolt and stud for them. You should really also change the crank front oil seal and timing cover dust seal. Some people also recommend replacing the camshaft seal as well, but I don't unless it's leaking.

Link to a thread I did a while ago concerning relacing the camshaft belt on a 300TDi Disco:-

To change the waterpump:

1) Remove the cover from the top of the fan, remove air hoses from above the water pump. If you havn't got the EGR blanked off, expect to see a nice black gunky mess.
2) Crack the 3 bolts that hold the water pump pulley to the pump
3) Remove fan belt
4) Remove fan belt tensioner
5) Remove pulley from water pump
6) Remove pully from powersteering pump (put one spanner on one bolt and crack the other two, then tighten one and crack the other and keep going until you can remove all of them.
7) Drain coolant
8) Undo the water pump fixing bolts
9) Remove pump and clean mating face.
10) Refitting is the reverse of removal, torque for water pump bolts is 18lb/ft (I THINK!).
