I'm sure you'll all be interested to know that the break-down I suffered last Saturday was caused by the timing belt snapping!!!:p
The pushrods are on order so I might be back on the road next week sometime......or the week after.....or whenever............:p
Of course the pushrods may only be the start of it..........
BTW before anyone asks the timing belt was renewed 22k miles ago.The engine(300tdi) has had the modification done.
I'm just lucky I guess!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:yay:

I might need a bit of help here................How do you tell if the modification to the timing has been done?
The timing belt was only changed at 99k miles(22k ago) according to the service history. And 3 weeks/250 miles ago.
The new belt looks like it has done 121k miles! It's all chewed up down one side.Very strange.
Old Fart got me thinking..................
Any help/advice would be much appreciated..............
:p

I would be in touch with the dealer. And you never know, if the service record says it's been done and the belt is still being damaged you may be able to take some legal action against them for not fixing the problem.

I think there are 2 or 3 kits that can be fitted to the early 300 TDi's and they all came out at different times.
The engines that had kits fitted by LR agents "should" have a yellow blob of paint on the top of timing cover, but that doesn't tell you which kit was fitted and when! :dunno1:
If the belt is chewed on one side then it's been rubbing on the timing cover and sounds like the kit is not doing it job, so best keep an eye on it!

If your Timing belt has been modified by a dealer it should have the yellow paint on the top of the timing case. I think part of the mod was to fit a new timing drive toothed wheel on the crankshart which has two side cheeks to stop the belt from slipping off the wheel and cutting itself up. Have a look at the Difflock web site which has some great pictures of how to change the timing belt.

You could get Zues timing gear, but they're expensive. But you'd never need to worry about breaking a belt again! :p

You could get Zues timing gear, but they're expensive.ISTR working out that you could do about 3 timing belt changes for the cost of a set of Zeus gears. So your engine will be about 160k miles older before they've paid for themselves.......assuming you don't break a timing belt.....but then thats the fear (paranoia?!) that salesmen use :)
BTW, on a related note......if you break a belt on a 300TDi it does make a mess...as Janine has discovered (oops pun not intended!) but a 200TDi just bends a few push rods....hey ho :)

Mine has the yellow paint, but I can't see raised edges to the sides of the coggy bits.
The new belt that arrived today is very different from the one that snapped. It's much thicker and wider.I wonder if the last belt was wrong one for my engine?:p
The dealer only says that it must have been fitted in correctly........
Well,he would,wouldn't he?...........:p
Thanks for the help,chaps,much appreciared.:yay:

I would think that after only 3 weeks/250 miles that whoever fitted it has either done so incorrectly, or the belt was incorrect or faulty at the time of fitting.
Either way I would expect whoever fitted it to carry out any repair work free of charge and for them to take it up with the belt manufacturer if they believe it to be a defective belt.

I agree with Andy, If the dealer fitted the wrong belt or fitted it incorrectly then they are responcible for the damage and for the fitting of the new belt. The old and the new belt should look the same in terms of size and thickness (apart from the damage). If the old one has a part no on it try and trace it and find what it is for. If you can do that and find it is for another model you have a hard case against the dealer. It may seem a bit harsh but better than paying for the damage and new repair.

Janine,
Go here for the pictures of the Crankshaft pully. You should be able to identify which one you have from these pictures.

Faulty timing belt upgrade kit supplied by Landrover (STC4095K) - see above.
Timing belt kit (fitted only four months ago) replaced. Engine completely rebuilt under warranty by the LR dealer.
Three new timing belts within six months, not to mention new rockers, pushrods, valves and other engine bits ruined by the timing belt failure.

Not personally,Stephen. The mechanic who worked on the motor made the part rep come to see him again. He told him once again about the belt and the rep is"almost" willing to agree that it's shoddy manufacturing. We're assured that it "happens in all vehicle parts from time to time":yikes: :yikes: :yikes:
The case continues..........................His manager was a tube aswell!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
