how can i alter the grid refs on my garmin gps v to work with os grid refs? or is there a way of working out one from the other

What type of Garmin GPS do you have? If its an etrex you need to set the grid to OS GB and WGS84.

Your Position Format should be set to British Grid and your Map Datum to Ord Srvy GB.
