My mate has a Disco 300 Tdi. He was driving at 70 mph on the motorway when he noticed the temp gauge in the RED!

He pulled over a soon as he could, but motorway down to two lanes with no hard shoulder. He couldn't pull up for around 15 mins, but was going at a slow pace for that length of time. When he pulled over, the engine had sprayed coolant everywhere. When he pulled over, the engine wouldn't restart, and after a few minutes the engine started and sounded really rough.

The breakdown recovery bloke thought the cylinder head had blown, but after 15 mins of cooling down the engine started and sounded normal. Apart from a slightly lower tickover the engine sounded fine. The breakdown recovery person took out the thermostat which looked locked in the closed position.

The engine is still getting warmer at high speed, but at 30-50mph speeds seems ok.

My mate informs me he put some RadWeld in to cure a small coolant leak. Don't trust it myself...

Any ideas? I have recommended getting the system pressure tested. What else could have happened?
