Hi Guys,
I have checked out the Cruise control on my 98 300TDi auto and sure enough the vaccuum hose was split at the actuator end, at the tee piece where it goes off to the brake pedal and wasn't even on at the vac pump as it was so badly perished. Well I have made good the seal at the actuator, the tee pice and the pump however as I can't see the pump only feel it how do I know which place to connect the hose. The appears to be 2 protractions on the left (looking from the passenger seat) and I have fitted it to the rear most one wich seems to have a lip on it to keep the hose in place...is this correct:confused:
I suppose the easiest way is to remove the vac pump and look but it seems all boxed in with no way of getting it out...........:(

Can anyone advise how to remove the vaccum pump or better still describe where the hose should go.

Many thanks in advance

Hi Andy,

I had the same problem on my 300tdi, on the pump there are 3 pipes, the one that you have slotted on should be a thicker diameter than the other 2.

How i got the pump out is, removed the jack and bent the plate up under it and fed it out thats the only way i could figure out how to remove it.

Also check the switch behind the brake pedal and make sure all the brake lights are working properly.

Thnks for that Archie,
I have checked the hose at the brake switch and it seems all okay. I can hear the relays coming n and out as I switch it on and off or put the brakes on so I have to get to the vac pump. I've been sent offshore for a few days so I will check on Monday when I'm back.

thaks again

Just got my cruise control fixed, (it was split hoses again, why doesn't someone market a hose that doesn't dry out and split....)

Anyway, I find the cruise control is fine once the auto box has shifted up into top at around 53mph but below that it wanders up an down due to the lag in response. The slower the cruise speed the worse it is. Are they all like that or have I got a duffer :-(

they are all like that, it's fine on the motorway or dual carriageway but not a great deal of use any where else.

I was driving through a long 30 zone last night which has about 10 speed cameras, so I set it at about 32mph it then drops to about 25mph before speeding up again to 32mph.

One thing I did find to help is if I thought it was getting a bit slow just touch the accelerator slightly and it goes back to 32mph rather than having to wait until it gets down to 25mph.

Strange thing is the manual says it won't work below 28mph? Must just be that you can't set it below 28mph

My last 300Tdi was just the same. The Td5 is much better, no doubt aided tremendously by the electronic engine management as opposed to loads of vacuum pipes and levers.
