My 1992 Disco's transfer gear lever has suddenly stopped changing the box from high to low, feels like its not attached to anything ? i.e. sloppy

Could it of worked its way loose?

It will still go to the left and right lock/unlock the diff.

Any comments. :dunno1:

Have a look underneath to see if the linkage is broken. It might help to get someone to move the lever from side to side so you can see where it is easier.

Took the middle consol out, everything seems to be attached, the linkage is moving the bar that comes out of the transfer box :Cross: I think I'm not going to like this am I :drunk:

Hmm.....sounds like it might be a bit more complicated. Can you get to the hatch with the consol out? If so take that off and see if it sheds some light on the situation.

Which "hatch" do you mean?

I don't know the gearbox as fitted to Disco's, but most have a plate that can be unbolted from the top. My LT95 has one that you can un-bolt, but there's not enough clearance to get if off! Worth a look though.

right mate, try and bear with me while i try to explain it for you. ive just put one of these together in my hybrid so here goes. the lever has two parts to the arm coming off it, one goes down to the transfer box to engage diff lock and the other goes down and back to engage high and low. these levers are attached by a sort of bar and circlip sort of thing.one of these is the favourite to have come off, especially if the lever feels VERY slack. hope this is of help mate:yay:

:dunno1: When you move the stick backwards and forwards it moves a bar up and down which in turn rotates a small bar on the top of the front side of the box is that right?

Looks to me as though the problem is inside the box :Cross:

Just an update for anyone else that may have the same problem at some time.

I took the six bolts out of the cover on top of the transfer box where that selector bar goes in, the bar has a selector fork attached to it with a 5mm grub screw, it had worked its way loose.

Mr Loctite has met Mr grub screw and he will not be leaving the party early again.

Just found this thread and it looks as if I may have the same problem. Is it possible to gain access to the top of the transfer box in situ? As I am currently on a caravanning holiday it would be great to repair mine without the cost of having it removed completely.

This is an oldsite that has recently moved. It's American but don't that put you off, it's full of info, diagrams & pictures.
I had the problem where I could engage low-range, but not diff-lock. Mine was so bad that on dis-asembly the splined shaft was moving, not it the one running through it to operate the diff-lock.

Here's a thread about it;

This was the new £5.00 selector mechanism complete in its 'crown casting' prior to installation (plenty of Copper Grease to prevent a re-occurrance)

And the selector back in place & ready to replace the trim.

(By the way; if anyone remembers my request last year for an analogue clock for my Discovery, I eventually bought a new one for a late Range Rover Classic)

It looks as if your problem was external to the transfer box. MeIsMook found his problem in the box:-

>I took the six bolts out of the cover on top of the transfer box where that selector bar goes in, the bar has a selector fork attached to it with a 5mm grub screw, it had worked its way loose.

>Mr Loctite has met Mr grub screw and he will not be leaving the party early again.

What I wasn't clear about was whether the cover plate MeIsMook mentioned was accessible from the console aperture.

I will look at the US web site when I can get to the local WiFi hotspot - web is a bit slow when parked in a field with a mobile phone!

Thanks to the message by MeIsMook I had a quick look under the Disco and the housing on the transfer box looked to be available from above. Today I removed the console and removed the pop rivets etc. as per guru Haynes. The housing for the selector arm mechanism was easily accessible and I found the same loose grub screw. A good clean up and dose of loctite followed by some lub and reassembled. Now works perfectly. Love working on the Disco, reminds me of my first car (in the 1950s), a 1933 Alvis. Same aluminium bodywork and steel chassis.
I hate pop rivets!
