View Full Version : rabbit problem - help needed?

I rent a piece of land which over the past couple of years has got over run with rabbits. Does anyone out there fancy helping me out (well doing it for me really, I'm too squeamish)?
Got a near neighbour whose cows and horse I look after when they go away who has an even worse problem - rabbits just ignore people walking past. - a 22 with a silencer would be very useful.
Anyway, if interested, please PM me
cheers

Love to help you with them [thats what i do  ] but alas i'm down in Surrey.

Unless you can B+B me, my sidekick and a couple of terriers for a week-end ;)

if only you were closer, can ask on some air rifle forums if you wish?

I would be happy to help, live in Leeds, but use a 12G O/U so the land would need to be safe to use a shotgun on.

Regularly keep numbers down on a mates farm near Otley.

Cheers

Have you tried a Bun-Vac (http://www.golemproducciones.com/prod/wallaceygrommit4l.jpg)?

We use cages around here, bait them with carrots and after a few days every cage will have at least 1 rabbit in every morning.

Have literally caught hundreds this way.

The only problem is having to dispatch the bunnies if you are squeamish!

In the two months I have been at my new place i have shot 256 rabbits now..and there are still hundreds out there.

Come winter the ferrets will be put to work and that shoud help.

We have cages too...not had a single rabbit in them yet..lol

Likewise, never had much luck using cages.
Snaring works well though [there's a knack to setting them just right]

Far easier to "snipe" the bugga's from afar ;)

At our last farm we were totally overrun with bunnies, we had an old chap come to catch them, he had about 60-70 cages. We used to go and check them, re-set them and bait them twice a day.

It takes about a week before the rabbits starts going in them, but we used to catch around 50 a day. Admittedly they worked much better in dry weather when grass was short or in very cold weather, so probably not too effective at the moment.

The old chap had a deal with some butchers and used to get £1.50 each for them as they had no wounds.

My partner has a work collegue over from Singapore just now and when he came over for a BBQ last week he saw all the rabbits and jumped up and down shouting "Where I get, where i get?" Cass asked him why and he said Rabbit was a delicacy in Singapore and he paid upto $50 (singapore dollers) for a rabbit from Oz.

I went and shot a couple, Cass did the butchering (I can kill em, but I cant gut and skin them..I am a whimp!) and he did the cooking, stirfried with a little soy, spring onion, chillie etc. It was really really nice!

We now have a cunning plan to shoot and ship rabbits to Singapore and make our fortune!

Was discusing this with a friend the other day, the rabbit problem... he is overrun with them. We reckon its cos the winter has been so mild, they have managed to slip another breeding cycle (or 2 ) in..they do breed like rabbits.:D

I think theres still mixymatosis here too...quite often youll can see them wandering round like there drunk. can walk up to them and smack them on the head. there lungs look nasty, like they have been gassed..is that mixy? or have they actually been gassed? like whitey yellow froth in the lungs. wouldnt want to eat them, thats for sure, and i like rabbit too...

Sounds like mixy. Eyes streaming and breathing/lung problems are the more obvious later symptoms. A very dark or even black liver is often the first sign however Mr Bunny obviously needs to either be dead or on a transplant table with a rabbit-liver-donor's card before you notice that ... I dislike rabbits and have no problem shooting, dispatching, skinning or eating them but I pity any of the poor blighters with mixy ...

You want rabbit problems, you should see the south island of new zealand, they have done film before about the problem, overnight they can have 2000-3000 rabbits strip a field to the dirt of grass

Tell ya what though, fantastic weekends shooting down there ;)

Wouldnt eat the vermon though eeeeew

Hey NO.
Last thing I want is to put you out of work. But I don't see the point of these do gooders letting the foxes go and eating my ducks and chickens before we can shoot them.
It's crazy.
We need some to to keep the bunnies down, but release six of the ******s (as the idiots of the RSPCA did by us) and they're going to go looking for more foodies. My ducks. God I hate Foxes. Must go, getting upset and angry.....
I've certainly added my name to the petition anyway.

Sad fact of life that a lot of the "problem" ones i shoot have a shaved spot on a front leg  .
Like you say, brainless do-gooders that haven't a clue how these things work !

Where they have obviously recieved medical care [shaved spot for intravenous drip/jabs etc] at a clinic or animal shelter, then lobbed into the countryside to fend for themselves. [despite the fact most are urban foxes] :shakehead

Sorry for seeming to abandon this thread - been manic with the odd drop of water affecting my commute into leeds via walk, bus and train and walk. British rail are now providing a service (!) that runs hourly instead of 4 x per hour and does a tour of west yorkshire. Couple that with a sheep that decided that she didn't want to be gathered with the rest ...........
Had some offers of help for which I am very grateful, will try and contact you in due course as things calm down, although off on hols next weekend (rabbits will still be there)
again many thanks

Charlie, we have a cat, did you not see it when you were over? Big black thing with no tail. It catchs plenty of rabbits, as the decapitated bodies dumped on the doorstep every morning indicates, but the f***ers gang up on him..lol.

The rabbits just ignore him now, its rediculus. when he walks past they stand there ground and thump out a warning for him to back off...which the useless sod does!!

Backs, if they are ganging up on him, lend him a gun otherwise it's not fair!.:D

If anyone really wants to protest, go to the countryside Alliance website and get a HUGE spare wheel cover sized pro hunting sticker!.

Other good one is splash clothing where I got my " B******S to Blair shirt from, i'm sure they will change it to Brown soon.

What's been interstng is the number of strangers who have walkedup and agreed with me!.

I have been searching for land for ages and have just managed to get some.

Sometimes have trouble getting farmers to shoot on their ground. Have to plead with the cattle stories.

Stick with it though chaps, worth it in the long run.

I like the idea of roling out the Bun Vac 6000, or maybe the US would drop you a daisycutter to sort them out.

I really don't know why farmers can't sell these to the public as organic meat if they are on registered farms. I just prefer one shot rather than spitting out lead shot from a 12g.

- or are we back to the AA-12 again to sort them out ?
