I recently sold my Discovery 200 Tdi (manual) which regularly returned 29-30 mpg.

I saved up all my pennies and bought a new TD5ES (auto) . I knew this would use a bit more fuel, BUT after 5000 miles it's averaging 21mpg!!

Can anyone tell me if this is typical? (The LR 'book' figures are 22/31/27mpg for urban/extra-urban/combined)

The vehicle typically does 25 mile journeys on 'A' roads, so has the opportunity to warm up & stretch its' legs a bit. (The same journeys that my 200Tdi did 29mpg!)

The difference does seem a bit 'unfortunate'! Anyone got any similar experiences? Thanks.

Hello,

I drive my Td5 110 HT on a 20 - 40 miles a day basis. Once a week, I have to drive her up to Brussels (round trip around 200 miles).

Average figures are between 21 and 26 mpg.

When driving long distances (e.g. a trip to the Italian Alps), the figure can go up to 28 mpg.

Hi,

I to have just purchased a "W" Reg TD5 and on my first full tank have registered 22.9mpg.

According to the hand book it should be about 29.

At the moment I am putting some of it down to the fact that I have not driven an automatic before and I guess it takes a bit of time to get the best from it.

I have however read a few reviews by owners and it seems as if 23 - 25 mpg is the general figure.

Regards,

Cheers Ernie,
I thought as much. The air con uses up a bit of fuel too. Like you I'll try driving without my diving boots on....:goofylook

With those sort of figures you'd be better off with a V8. :p

28mpg is the lowest I've got from my TD5 Disco 2 2001 and that was on a long drive at 85mph the whole way (430 miles), Aircon on and heavy right foot

Normally get 30mog around london with AC on

But its a manual

Time to give it a service and some nice synthetic oil methinks

If you're getting that sort of mileage, you're beating almost everyone else. Are you sure about your calculations?

The best we've got out of our TD5 Disco (manual) is 28mpg and that was trying! Most of the other owners say the same and autos are awful and never acheive the published figures.

In the Difflock forum recently lots of folks were getting similar out of their TD5's (some even more, the record was something like 35mpg)

Maybe the lack of hills down south?

I have been motoring in the Lammermuirs and back lanes of Livingston for last week. will work out consumption tonight when I fill up again

Do you use synthetic? (yes in my case)

Whats your mileage? (55k)

What tyres and wheels you running? (255/55-18)

What Diesel? (BP)

Lots of variables can make a difference, I actually considered the mileage skooting up here poor, its the worse I've ever got

Did a check on the last tankful - 27.9 mpg :p .

Worst we have had is about 24 mpg, through the 'hottish' summer, this sits well with our other car (Toyota Avensis 2.0 D4D), which dropped about 3 mpg over end of July into September.

The Disco does not have aircon, but like pontius, this is the very first auto that we (wife and I) have owned. I do enjoy giving it a boot, and the figure above is with a good mix a short motorway journeys (wife, 10 miles each way to work), town work and out and about on the country roads.

On average, our tankfuls last around the 500 mile mark with 80-82 litres on a fill (yes, I do advocate using the full tank - always have with every car owned and not suffered any problems!). We also tow a reasonably heavy caravan (1600kg) on occasion, the economy on the runs that we have done bring the average down to about 22-23, although we have not as yet done a straight check with towing only.

Our Disco runs on 235 tyres, so there is a bit less drag from them, it has covered 72k. Maybe one benefit is ACE, it lets you carry quite a bit of speed into those country corners, minimizing the braking/acceleration at them.

Pontius, hope your economy improves over time - it may just be the engine/auto box getting their communications right!!!

2002 TD5 Adventurer Manual 38000 miles - normal commuting 35miles each way (takes 1.5 hours) 535miles to the tank = 30mpg

Worst ever, Luton to Bordeaux fully loaded with a roof box driving flat out ie 95mph on the level 110mph down hill down to 310 to the tank = 17mpg, return journey at 85mph still only got up to 20mpg

Towing car trailer from glasgow to london with porsche 911 on board doing a steady 70mph = approx 28mpg

The consumption seems to really increase when you get over 75mph but 30 round town seems very good.

OK figures for time in Scotland and journey home

In Scotland, to and from work and greenlaning at weekends, 30.03 mpg

Trip home, at 75mph 431 miles 29.2mog

So faster you go the more it uses!!!! not suprising really when it has the aerodynamics of a brick

No roofrack and manual
