:yay: Finally found my perfect Landy and pick him up on Saturday :yay:

78,000 miles, 3 door, 300Tdi, all checks out pretty well after looking at everything I can get my hands on...

Soooo...after a fun playday at the weekend I've got a nice little list of "must-haves" before greenlaning etc. including sill guards and all other sorts of guards, but I'd be really grateful if any of you have a list of must haves I should get for my disco. Basically, he has nothing on him, he is completely standard - so any advice (even about the best place to get these things...) would be gratefully recieved :D

So, everybody - meet "Disco Stu" (temporary name whilst a proper one is considered :) )

Cool
Same colour as mine.

From previous experience I would get a decent set of rock sliders / cill guards, not much protection there.
A big tin of touch up paint as well if you want to keep it looking smart, otherwise get it painted drab, dont see many drap disco's.

lol @ WBC!

Nope - it wasn't :p ;) :D

Little garage in Hythe in Hampshire, cill guards are on the list, thanks for the advice - lots of protection needed :)

I must say a typical "girlie" comment, but I do love the colour :D

Just like my wife, she chose my previous defender on the bloody colour then wouldnt let me go green laning in it in case I scratched it. :-(

On my list would be a decent set of tyres, steering gaurd, diff gaurds, sills, bull bar, roof-rack and a snorkel. The front spoiler should come off for off-road trips or you'll end up ripping it off. You can put it back on again after. It depends how serious you want to be with it. Diff gaurds would suit me, but not nesesary for everyone. Sills are good, but not needed. Again it depends what you are going to do with it.

Thanks Stephen :coolgreen

Re: tyres - I was looking at getting another pair for off-roading, i.e. keep the alloy's with the road tyres on and get something for off-roading on some steel's..comments?

Probably would go with diff guards - basically it's going to be used pretty much everyday for work (so trundling around the roads and big grass verges for highway inspections etc.) and then we're going to start with some greenlaning until we get to know the Landy and it's abilities...then the aim is to do playdays like below, as these are the guys who got me into the whole scene! Oh, and next summer a trip to Italy for off-roading at 10,000 ft :coolgreen :D

...oh and the front spoiler's coming off on the 2nd ;) :D

WBC - lol! :) I love the colour, but pretty much accept it's going to get battered ;) :D

Have a Disco like yours, without any modifications of note, and for the last 9 years it has coped with the worst African roads and bush can offer without any real difficulty.

Can't see UK green lanes causing it any hassle!.

Good luck and enjoy!

David

Sounds like a good plan. Mind you, you could save money and buy a decent set of all terrains. THe BF Goodrich AT's look good and have a good name. My dad has the BFG mud terrains on his Range Rover. They're fine on the road, but they are noisey and they will wear faster. Off road they will be excelent. If you are going for a set of steels, then 2nd hand Disco rims are easy to come by. Spotter has a load, and I know someone that is selling some for £40 a set. Personaly I'd prefer 130 or Wolf rims. :) They look tougher and have a bigger off-set so they fill the arches better than the 5 spoke steels.

As a Postscript see you are planning to play with your new toy in the Mountains of Italy at 10,000ft next summer.

I live at 5,000ft and the Turbo struggles a bit even at this altitude. But even I was surprised at the impact of thinner air at altitude when we spent a day or two in Lesotho last year driving over the highest pass in Africa (3,270 metres). The performance of a 300TDi turbo at that level was pretty awful. But you have a perfectly good engine anyway!

Best of luck.

Hi Jen,welcome to disco-Stu.I agree it's a lovely colour,Mine is Niagra grey,or drab!
I've had Flo for eighteen months now and am still waiting to fit a guard on her! She's been around a bit!
I see on the second piccy that the off-roading is a bit in the extreme. You should be alright with Stephen's advice, apart from the snorkel!!!! Unless you intend trying to drown him!:p :cool8:

If you need it for work, like I do,don't take him swimming at the week-ends!!!!!Paddling's alright for beginners!:hahaha: :hahaha:
I would get the sill guards first, they can get quite battered!!!!!That's after some beefy tyres.:p .We have a set of BIG mud terrains, that fit the disco and the 90 so we can take our pick for fun!! :yay: :yay: :yay:

:yay: Thanks for the info guys, sorry about the slow reply - needless to say I've spent most the weekend fiddling and driving!

Stephen - I'll certainly have a look around for options, I was wondering about tyres and it's good to confirm Goodrich have a good name in the Landy world, so I'll defaintly keep my eyes open :) Looking at the alloys at the moment, there's an annoying bit of damage caused on one by weights, so I might look to get the off-roading tyres on them?! Mm, options?! lol! :)

Thanks David - I'll bear that in mind, I pretty confident as the ugys went last year with a variety of Landy engines....I'm seeing them at the weekend so I'll ask how the engines coped :)

And finally, thanks Janine! :) I think I will stick with paddleing first - although I'd love a pic of him "swimming" on my wall, so I might have to fit a snorkel!! lol! Going to take it easy at first though...learn as much as I can...

Oo, a 90 too! :coolgreen I'd love to get a battered one to fix up as a project Landy... <sigh> Oh dear, it's starting already!! Guess there's no going back now?! :p

Anyway - here's Bob (re-named now, I think "Bob" suits him better :goofylook , private plate is being transfered ) ...we took him into the New Forest for a photoshoot and found a few (ok, they were very small!) small bumps, still kept me amused! :D

If you want to save the cost of a second set of tyres and rims, then you can fit a good set of all terrain tyres. That would save a few pennies. Steel rims would be good if you're going to do a lot of off-roading. 2nd hand alloys shouldn't be too hard to find should one get damaged. But you'd need to be going some to break one.

From experience of the lanes around me in derbyshire, I'd heartily recommend getting a couple of diff guards. I've got the QT rock slider type on my 90, and they've got pretty well scratched after only a couple of trips out. They're about UKP110 for a pair - much cheaper than a couple of diff pans!!!

The diff's are slightly lower on the Disco than in the defender...

On the subject of tyres, I've got AT's on the 90 - they cope with most stuff, but I wouldn't trust them in anything too muddy, as they do seem to get rather clogged up. They do look fairly chunk though!

Forgive me for using the "P" word, but it's worth polishing the vehicle before you start laning in it - it protects the paint from getting too scratched...

Enjoy your new toy...

Nice piccy Jen, with a bit more sunset in it, it would be nice for the photo comp forum :)

Yeah, it does. Branches can slide off the paint easier. I will polish mine next time I go green laning.
