i spent some time recently with a chap from the states who worked as head flight deck crew on a aircraft carrier on the US Navy.
Some of the stories he came out with were similar to as you see pictured.
A couple of things that spring to mind from talking to him:
- he told a plane to turn left on the deck, it turned right and the jetwash blew him halfway across the deck. He had to grab onto a tie ring and cower under his helmet to block the heat.
- he watched a plane do as pictured except it flew down the landing runway, pulled a hard 90 degree turn and he says you couldn't see the plane cause the vapour from the air shearing covering the whole plane. Guy flew round in a circle after that and landed it - turned out to be a high flying Top Gun Ace. He offered to carry his bag off the plane and the General goes " Hell no, ah'll carry my own bag son"
- Next plane to land was a normal pilot, who asked him to carry his bag for him. Pal turned round and said " F-off, i aint a porter - the General can carry it, so so can you "
- on a land base, he listened in to an F16 waiting at the end of the runway for takeoff. Pilot asked for an "unlimited takeoff" which basically is a request to do what you want on takeoff. Tower can back with approval. With the brakes on, he hit full afterburner, let the brakes off, got the wheels off the ground lifted into the body. Pulled a 2 barrel rolls while still tracking along the runway, pulled up vertically and dissappeared into the clouds.
Made for interesting flights when we travelled together.
Oh, and the biggest insult you can give a pilot when departing the aircraft and he's landed crap is to comment " I enjoyed your landings, all of them "

That and the discussion shows the yanks as gung-ho. Little wonder they keep killing all their allies with friendly fire if that's the way they are allowed to treat a multi million pound piece of equipment that the hard earning taxpayer has paid for. Not impressed at all!:roro:

Fair points. Further to some of my comments:
a) on the plane turning the wrong way, the pilot could have been discharged on the spot, My pal didn't report it but instead, made the pilot buy him quite a few beers over time. On the deck, the flight deck crew outrank everyone else. Flight deck crew tells you to move, you move - even if your an admiral.
b) the fly past - apparently its often standard practice to do a fly past the runway before landing - the crack turn described was just an especially hard turn making the vapour effect especially noticable.
c) the normal pilot being told to beat it - nothing wrong there
d) unlimited take off - not necessary
I bet the RAF do similar.

When my dad was in the RAF Regiment he was often on the Bofor (sp?) at the end of the runway at Tangi Airfield, Singapour. The Lightning pilots would often use it as an aiming point! Some would take off and fly along the runway and pull up over the gun giving them all a face full of exhaust. Others would drive bomb them when landing. Even the Vulcan's did it! My dad saw a Lighting go out on alert. It went from stationary to full re-heat and lifted it's wheels within a couple of seconds! It pulled up, but was still going horizontaly before it climbed and disapeared! The the (fully armed) Vulcans went out. They tore down the taxi-ways, wheels screaching as they turned onto the runway and imediatly went to full re-heat. A few seconds and they were off the ground and away. An amazing sight apparently.
Another story....one guy my dad knew got ****ed one night and decided he wanted to go home. He wasn't a pilot but figured it wouldn't be that hard to fly a (armed) Lightning. He climbed into the cockpit and started pushing buttons trying to get the thing to start! This plane was facing one of the ammo dumps! He was dragged out of the plane and given a good kicking!
Yet another....a Hunter was coming in, badly shot up and had to crash land as it had no landing gear. It hit the ground and slid towards the ammo dump! The canopy blew off and the pilots jumped onto the back of the planes, ran along the back and jumped off. Everyone jumped for cover, but the plane slid up to the fence and touched it with it's nose before stopping. :D
Interesting image, but not as close as the RAF Hercules pilot who beheaded a squaddie standing atop a 4-tonner during a dust-off.

My favourite...
Photo copyright of who it says on the bottom...
I have just Moderated-out that image because it is clearly marked as being Copyright.
As there seems to be some confusion about what a copyright notification is, I'll try to briefly explain. If an originator (i.e. photographer/writer/artist) or their agent asserts copyright in a piece of work, it is usually an indication that they wish to retain reproduction rights and/or due recompense for same. Copying that image without permission of the copyright owner is theft and is covered by International, European and UK legislation. In Britain, the relevant legislation is the 1988 Designs, Copyright & Patents Act.
If an image is posted on the web by the copyright owner but without a copyright notice, it is generally regarded as being 'in the public domain' and therefore open to unregulated reproduction - but it must always be borne in mind that you are making an assumption that it was the copyright holder who published it. The safest way in this case is to paste an URL link to the image, rathr than the image itself.
As the latest EU legislation on this subject will strengthen UK copyright law further by the end of this month, it is a wise precaution for posters to abide by the law in case it drops this forum into a legal quagmire.

No problem then Bob, thanks for the news on Copyright being tightened, as i photographer i have often found my photographs do tend to stray around on the net themselves... although i normally just leave em.
Avaiation Photography is the area i am now trying to branch into especially when my new SLR arrives.

The best looking British figher aircraft of WW2 in my opinion is the Hawker Tempest, closely followed by the Mosquito.

To SWBTigger,
If you want some low flying aircraft to photo then you should buy my house. We live just 3 miles on the extended center line of RAF Coltishall and on approach we can read the pilots names on the flying suit. On take-off they turn the reheat off 200meters down the lane!!!
I am waiting for some of the photos of the rivits I have taken to come back. They seldom fly at weekends but have fun at trhis time of year as they start to practice night flying up to 10 at night.
When I get some photo's will post a few.
Cheers,

Hi,
Nice place, sorry no room at the current time.:p
Small bungalow(needs to be a bungalow here) but hopefully extending next year(if I can keep the glass in the frames) also have 4 acres of land with it so am cutting my own runway for the models. I can only fly at the weekends though. Don't think the RAF would like to find a scale spitfire in the air intake of a Jaguar :snarl:
Welcome to cruise by any time though,
Cheers,

and for all you enthusiasts of "proper" fighter aircraft and bombers why not visit http://www.wbfree.net/download.php
where you can download the "Warbirds" computer game free and even play in the online arena for nowt...
An offer so cheap even a good Yorkshireman might consider it... :p
Be warned though... it's addictive... *but* like the real thing there are some *very* good pilots out there and if you are surprised by someone whilst travelling low and slow you will probably reap the rewards, in (virtual) heaven! :hahaha:

Hi,
Where are they. Would like to see them. I spent most of my childhood living not far from Wittering and followed the Harrier from early days. The Brother-in-law worked on them up to the GR4 untill he left the RAF.
Give me a Mosqueto or Spitfire any time though. My Dad(now 84) was a fitter with the RAF during the war and spent most of the war fixing Merlins with both Spitfire and Mosqueto squadrons. He can still tell you how to set up the Turbo chargers to get max power(as I found out when I took him to Old Warden and he spent 2 hours telling the young guys there how to do it). He tells me it took 3 of them to remove the engine and do a full rebuild and ground test the spit in 12 hours. Not bad going in open conditions.
Cheers,
