 Put the old Disco in for a pre-MOT yesterday and it's not good news.
Apart from the fiddly little bits like dickie earths on some of the lights there are a few quite expensive things that need sorting. There is a bit of welding, though not too bad considering her age, a bit on the inner wheel arch and another bit on the front passenger floor and inner sill. Needs a ball joint one side and some rubber bushes replacing at the back and a couple of break pipes. The really major things are, the steering box and drop arm are shot and will need to be replaced and also the UJ on the front prop has gone. Also needs wheel bearings on the front (which is not too bad as we have some we took off the back that have got a good bit of wear in them yet). Both swivel joints are leaking and although this is just an "advise" at present they will need doing before long. There is something else that needs to be done which is steering related, but can't remember what it is, hubby has gone of to work this morning with the list in his car.

Can't decide what to do. We've got quite a bit of kit on her, 2"lift, disslocation cones on the back, extended bump stops, rock sliders, steering guard, diff guards, A-bar and roof bar, and we have spent alot of time (and money)getting her how we want her, the chassis is 100% and the engine has no problems. We love her dearly and would hate to see her go, but we have to be realistic.

We have two options. Do the work using second hand parts and some help from our friends (can't afford new parts or garage prices just now) or sell her as she is for whatever we can get (no idea what she would be worth) and hope to get enough money back to buy a replacement vehicle of some sort, probably a Series.

What would you do?

If we decided to sell her we were thinking of advertising at around the £1500 mark...the bits on her alone are worth that, but there are so many Disco's for sale at the moment it's a bit of a buyers market.

I'de keep it Jen, you wont get much for it as is. A lot of the work such as UJ's and bearings are realy easy to do yourself.

Just found someone in Suffolk near where bro-in-law lives who is scrapping a Disco, same year as mine, so have e.mailed him to see how much he wants for the steering box, drop arm and front prop. What sort of price should I be looking at?

A reconditioned, exchange steering box will be around £200-£240, a universal joint for the front prop will be no more than £10.

Keep it and get the work done one way or another.
I used to get rid of cars when they had problems, but usually ended up buying some thing with more problems!

Been offered the steering box and drop arm for £50 and headlight for £10, sounds reasonable to me. Just got to find either front prop ou UJ.

Would really like to keep hold of her if we can. Sold my Series 3 a few years back after spending loads of cash on her because we needed the money and always regreted it, she was a great little wagon and a real looker. Would hate to have to part with another for the want of a few quid.

Propshafts are not Testable items, only Advisory, Front Drive shaft outer CVs are Testable, but he can't see those.

Welding is only needed if it's in a Prescribed Zone, 30 cm from a suspension mounting, steering or brake component mounting, Drivers seat mounting or seat belt mounting. Anything outside that zone is Advisory.

Got the list last night when hubby got home from work. reading it through again, now the initial pannic has worn off, I don't think it's really too bad. atleast there is no major chassis welding. She is an old K reg Disco when all is said and done.
I've attached the list we were given by the garage.

Just had to resize attachment and figure out how to change it from a TIF file to a jpeg. got there thanks to good old easy thumbnails.

Just one question. My Disco is a k reg with a KA VIN. According to the parts catalogue the part number is STC2846. Can't actually have a look at my Disco as it's parked at my friends house which is 10 miles away, so could anyone tell me if it's the 4 bolt box I need?

cant see the list but get it done better the car you know rather than starting again. as you know there basic ,iff not a little oily. cant help on the box . wouldnt have thought the welding on the inner w/arch is a fail on the front anyway, iff you get a box get one and a new drop arm can be a pig to remove. dont be put off buy the welding , think most of them need some work ive just put a plate in my n plate, and sill work . think its a landy thing. good luck , cheers alan......
