Can anyone help, i own a Discovery 2 2003 td5 i have developed a noise when first taking up drive on releasing the clutch, this noise is not always there, can be minimised by letting out the clutch very slowly.

The noise is quite loud hard to discribe like a dry urrrrrrrp noise, its not herd any other time unless you are pulling away and even then not always there.

I have had it at a local garage they had it nearly aweek and he said it was the gearbox, the vehicle is under warranty, i have to decide to get the garage to remove the gearbox and strip to find the fault and the warranty have to then make a decision weither to pay for it, i need to be sure before i let this garage rip my box apart as i might end up paying the bill.

I would go for the release bearing on the clutch first as its a lot cheaper.

Depends when the noise comes on as to where the problem lies.

If it is quiet when you press the clutch, then gets noisey when you engage a gear, then quiet again when the drive is taken up, it will be the spigot bearing in the end of the crankshaft.

I had a bit of advise today from another garage about a guy how had the clutch and flywheel replaced and didnt cure the noise and he mentioned the spigot bearing, is this a big job and does most warranties cover this.

Spigot bearing, common TD5 fault.Of the three new TD5's my old man has had, this is the only fault he has had with them.(Apart from total brake failure on the second one)

Is the spigot bearing different to the spigot bush and would the bush be replaced as well if it is a different component.
